Thick and curly hair

Hello,
I've finally decided to let my hair grow out some. It's naturally thick and curly. I usually use products to manage my hair and I full plan to continue to do so during my growing out stage, though I'm switching to different products to better handle the longer lengths. I've never had long hair and I'd chicken out previously due to bad hair days. This time I'm sticking it out and I find it easier to deal with bad hair days now that I've made up my mind.
I'm doing research to understand best how to deal with long hair. I was hoping that you would have any suggestions for my particular hair type.
Thanks!
Alex

Hey, I'm right there with ya! I'm also a curly haired guy with really thick/course hair and have tried to grow it out on numerous occasions before. I was discouraged by my family before due to the general messyness/afroness of my hair, but am now ready to go all the way.

I used to tie my curly hair back in a pony tail and were it almost down to my waist but as the tangles got too much of a hassle I made the big mistake of cutting it short.
So I have now decided to compromise and let it grow a bit longer then this well known scientist "Steven Pinker" so it completely hides my ears.
It is now a fraction longer at the moment than this with a little less gray. But I think the gray defines the curls and can only enhance it. Steven Pinker should let grow his hair grow a lot longer now with those tremendous silvery curls. But not enough to tie it back in a pony tail. That would be a pity.

This one is better. This is how I want to wear mine for the rest of my life.
