Please tell me..

what I can do to make my hair more managable? It's currently just past shoulder-length back & sides, bangs to chin, but EXTREMELY thick!
It sits flat on top but has a thickness of a full 4" at the sides, viewed front on. So the whole thing doesn't look too good. I normally tie it back and gel it but I'd love to be able to wear it down but don't know how I could do this.
There's no way I'd walk around with an undercut (just my personal opinion, no offense)- I've had it layered in the past but that was a disaster! Gelling & leaving it loose doesn't work either. I'm close to just giving up on it and I was wondering if anyone here had a solution? Sorry, I don't have any pics but you know those 60's hair-do's?!!
Also I should say my hair is NOT curly, just slightly wavey.
Thanks in advance,
Wilde Wolfe.

You need to give your hair time. It is not near long enough to lay that thickness down under it's own weight. The longer hair gets, the heavier it gets and the more it lays flatter all the way around. Growing hair long is a commitment that you have to decide wether or not you can live with it through the bad times. In the stage you are in it will not look the way you paticularly want it to. This is where perseverance comes in.
Do this: As you look at yourself in the mirror, imagine in your mind that all the hair you see by your head and neck is down by your elbows. Now you can naturally imagine what it will look like by your head and neck at that point. All that hair by your elbows is pulling all the hair by your head and neck down much closer to the head under all that weight. This is what I am looking forward to. My hair is currently the exact same length you described yours to be. I have said it in the past that right now is not my hair time, but what I described above with it by my elbows and longer is going to be my hair time. Then it will be long enough to lay and fall the way I want it to. The elbow is just an example. It will do what you want even shorter than that, but where you are now is still awkward and you need to decide how much you want long hair. Good luck and Peace, bro!

try this: while the hair is damp/drying, place your hand(s) with fingers spread on your scalp at your front hairline. Move your hand(s) into the hair like you intend to run your fingers through it. Keeping your hands on your scalp, run your fingers into your hair stopping when the base of your fingers is at your hairline. Close your fingers to grasp your hair and pull your hands back out of your hair--keeping them on your scalp. This will loosen that hair which generally sits flat on top and give it some lift and volume. You might want to place A LITTLE BIT of styling product (gel, mousse, etc.) on your hands to help "set" the resulting lift.

Would a half tail work? I might remove some of the hair volume from
the sides but stiil leave you with hair down.
This opinion has been offered by one who actually does walk around
with an undercut (don't worry, no offense taken, hee).
Thankyou all for the advice
