Can the sun cause damage to your hair if you expose your hair to it too long?

Yes, over exposure to the sun can have a damaging effect on the hair due the bleaching effect the sun has on hair. It can dry it out and make it brittle by stripping it of it's moisture. Peace!

I worked at a summer camp last year as a lifeguard and ropes course facilitator. I spent about 8 solid hours a day in the full sun without a hat (couldn't stand to wear 'em). I didn't experience any damage or even lightening of the color. . . .I just made sure to condition every day. no damage or splits

I was a lifeguard for the beginning part of growing my hair. Yeah I wore a hat a lot, but I still think I suffered some of the effects of the sun. The hair on top, especially the hair in front seems a shade lighter than the rest of my hair. I think it caused more color change rather than damage. Either way, from now on I'll wear something to keep my hair's exposure to the sun to a minimum.

I don't know if it would damage it, but I find that my hair always becomes a couple of shades lighter in the summer time, and then in the winter time, it's fairly dark (since I work inside most of the time).

I used to think sun bleached hair was cool but now just consider it a sign of damage. Sun is damaging especially to long hair because the ends are years and years old. Most things in this world deteriorate after years of harsh doses of UV, including hair. It makes sense.
Bought some liquid spray sunblock and intend to use it this summer and see if that helps protect my head from the elements; have been having a problem growing it longer and still have the ends look healthy. Length, recently shortened 8in/20cm, is now just below the sternum.
