A half pony tail is when you put the hair from the sides and the top of the head in a tail, but let the hair in the back lay loose.
That's basically the best way to explain it. If I had a digital cam here, I'd put mine in a half tail to show you. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, and I'm not typing a thousand words!

I've worn my hair a few times with just the sides held back with a
ponytail band, sort of like an organic headband, if you will. I
basically take a lock of hair from either side of my head and secure
it with a band, the top/back hairs just fall naturally behind the
secured locks of hair.
The hair is actually held quite loosly, so that I hardly know it's
tied back there and it keeps the hair out of my face.
It is probably the most functional -and- comfortable hair style for
me.
