cut suggestions?

Hi all,
I I've been growing mine out for about a year and a half now-- I have curly hair that is mostly one length and falls to about my chin. Well it's looking a little big and wide lately, and I'm not liking the shape, so I want to get my first real haircut. Meaning keeping the length, but going for a "style."
I don't really know what style to try and don't really want to leave it up to the stylist. do you guys have any suggestions, or know of any men't style pictures out on the web for me to look at?
Also, a question about the hair right above your sideburns: do y'all grow out the hair on your temples, or keep it trimmed? because at my last trim, the guy insisted on cutting it so that my hair looked neater... and now it's grown out some and sticks out when I do a ponytail-- but I'm not sure if it would just be better to let it grow out like the rest of my hair.
Thanks!
David

I'd suggest you have a look at a variety of pictures and see what you like, though I wouldnt cut the hair at your temples, sideburns are one thing temples are another. Though it was fashionable about a year or so back to just undercut half an inch around the hairline (temples, ears, neckline) I never liked the look and I reckon its best avoided.
When your looking at styles I'd say you look at womens galleries too as many longhair styles are "long hair" styles rather than "female" styles.
Mind you, if you go for a "style" I think your probably going to end up with long layers, in some format or another. Why? Cos given what you've described its what most stylists are going to recommend. Layers will make your hair less bulky and should give your hair beter shape, just make sure that the stylist leaves your layers long enough to reach you ponytail, otherwise you'll be a little frustrated when you want to tie it back.

There is a technique for thinning out thick hair.
I have very thick hair but it is also slightly coarse.
I didn't care for the thinning process but I think that its
because my hair is slightly coarse in texture. It felt
like the stylist was ripping out my hair with dull scissors.
If you try the thinning method be sure and talk to the hairstylist
about the technique and instruments used. Don't let them go ripping
through your hair. My stylist was a little rough on me and left some shredded looking ends.
I left there a little angry but the thinning did help on those
bushy hair days. I had to trim off some of the shredded ends myself.
Grrrrrrrrrr!
If I had to do it all over again. I wouldn't!!!!

: I don't really know what style to try
DON"T make an appointment with a stylist until you do have a very definite idea
and don't really want to leave it up to the stylist.
RIGHT ON!
