Depends on your hairtype. But some general advice is:
- Avoid bushing. Comb instead.
- Comb you hair in the direction it naturally falls.
- damp it down as you style and let it dry naturally.
- avoid blow drying and particularly brushing your hair as you dry it, as doing so will increase the volume.
You can also use gel and wax to keep it down, but I'm not a great advocate of using styling products.
I have not idea what stage you are at with growing your hair, but if you are still growing out then I can tell you that during the 12-18 months you are going to perceive your hair to be much "bigger" than it ever was before - thats largely because your unascostomed to seeing yourself looking the way you do. It doesnt necessarily mean that your hair is "poofy", it may just seem that way from your perspective if you have always been accostomed to wearing short hair.
A picture and bit of info about your hair type will make it easier to give more specific advice.
Hats?

Would anyone else reccomend using a hat as your hair is drying to reduce volume?

I am only in month 3 of my hair growing attempt. I went 6 months a couple of years ago. I am hoping to go the year with only 1 trim. I have very thick, coarse hair, so mine gets poofy too. Stan placed a couple of pics I sent him on his site. I'll send him updates every two weeks.
I had a funny thing happen Saturday. Someone who hadn't seen me since I began to grow my hair asked me if I dyed it. I hadn't done. It just seems to be darker as it grows.
Anyway, you all are an encouraging bunch. I am glad to find you. Sorted, I think I like your look and that maybe my goal.
Have a great day guys.
Steve

Thanks Steve, nice of you to say so... though I'm still in the "growing out" phase myself.

I use a bit of Citre Shine after my hair dries and it does a pretty good job of taming poofiness. But be careful not too use too much, as it will make your hair greasy.
I'm going to try Bumble & Bumble Defrizz when this stuff runs out, as I've heard it doesn't make your hair too greasy. I'll let you know what I think of it.
Cheers,
Jeremy
