You are in what we call the 'awkward stage'. This is what makes the transition from short hair to long hair so difficult. Your hair will be difficult to control during the awkward stage and there are no shortcuts. Guys use a combination of gel, hats, bandanas, hairspray, headbands, and good humour to control the poofyness. Whatever you do don't let anyone convince you that they can 'thin it out'. This is NOT the way to achieve long hair and it will only prolong the awkward stage. If you post some pictures we will be able to give you advice more specific to your hair type. Good luck.

The 'poofiness' is caused by the tendency of the growing hairs to stick straight out from the scalp. Once the hairs get long enough their own weight will cause them to turn down toward the ground and, eventually, lie flat. The proces of 'thinning' the hair involves cutting some of the hairs shorter than others. This is fine if you plan to keep your hair the same length. But if you want to grow it further you will end up with a mix of longer hairs that want to lie flat plus shorter hairs that are trying to stick straight out. You'll still have poofy hair. 'Thinning' will not solve the problem; it will just prolong the poofy stage. In my progress pictures you can see my hair change from the 'poofy' awkward stage at the bottom of the page to lying flat near the top:

I see, so what if I have my hair the perfect length I want it and don't plan on growing it any longer? Then it's alright for me to thin my hair?

Sure, if your hair is the length you want then thinning your hair is a good way to control poofiness. In fact thats exactly what the stylist did back in the 70s with my trendy collar-length style (they use special thinning scissors). Since this is a 'long hair' support forum I'll tell you that the other way to control poofiness is to grow your hair longer. But if you have found the length you want a stylist can thin it to knock down the poofiness. Good luck!
