hair in bangs

I'm just starting to grow out my hair, I haven't decided yet if I want to really let it grow out, I'm just experimenting for now.
There's a couple things holding me back.
-My bangs get it my eyes. They're just a the length where they touch my eyelashes, and the other day I got "stabbed" in the eyeball by my hair(which is stiff, another problem). I know the bangs are supposed to be long too for the complete "long hair" look, but this is really turning me off of having long hair. Did you guys have this problem too?
-I think my hair might be too stiff (coarse?) to ever weigh itself down. This contributes to a poofiness problem which lasts for about 6 hours after I shower. The stiffness also makes it look dry and damaged. I'm not going to go around feeling guys' hair but it looks like most longhaired people have softer hair that flows smoothly. Is there anything I can put in my hair to soften it up a little?
-My ears stick out more than most people's. This is fine while my hair is in the poofy stage because it poofs out to cover my ears, but when it gets slicked down more from the natural oils, my ears stick out like boulders in a river. So my ears part the hair down the sides. Since my hair is so stiff it doesn't wrap around my ears, and since the hairs that would cover my ears originate near the top of my hear, you can see he part about an inch above where my ears start.
-The mullet look, at least for now before the front and sides are long. My hair on my neck falls just below my collar. Should I trim it up a little bit so the rest of my hair can catch up?
I'll try to get some pictures up soon, especially so I can show you guys how the ear thing works. I really want some long hair because that would fit my personality, and my friends really want me to grow it out. I'm just not sure if I'm cut out for it though.
Thanks

Wow you raise a lot of points for a single post, but I'll try and give you the benefit of a fellow jug-ear who's growing their hair out..

Generally you can train your hair to part around your eyes, its just takes a little time to train your hair so a little gel or wax will come in handy for a few weeks. Centre parts tend to work best for keeping hair out of your eyes, and they can look pretty cool provided you dont plaster your hair to head and take on a Hittler look.

I don't know what shampoo or conditioner you are using, or how often you wash your hair. But try using a shampoo and a seperate conditioner that has a "hydrating" formula, and makesure you wash and condition atleast twice a week. This should get your hair softer and smoother flowing. Personal recommendation: Herbal Essences from Clairol, but you'll get plenty of other suggestions if you ask.

My ears stick out a little too, best advice is to keep the hair around your ears with a reasonable amount of length and push your hair behind your ears, this will create a little extra volume without been "poofy" and in turn make your ears less prominent.

The Mullet Look is not something you really need to worry about, as to be a "Mullet" the hair at the back has to be long and the rest short, as all your hair is growing out more or less evenly it wont look like a mullet.
Its personal preference but I think that hair styles look most balanced when there is more length on top than at the back, so I spent my first year keeping the back trimmed a little shorter, (But not buzzed!) But the back sufferes from its own awkward stage as the hair reaches shoulder length, particularly if you have wavy hair, as it tends to curl outwards and take on a King Charles Spaniel Look. Sooner or later you have to bite the bullet and grow through it. You can do it now or later.
Hope that helps.

I have thick coarse hair that poofs. On top of that my scalp forms cowlicks. I get the swirly effect. lol
Let me tell you the longer my hair is the more managable it is. The cowlicky thing just serves to give me a more "surfer" look. =)
Hang in there and let it grow!!!! Sorry you got poked in the eye! lol
I also need very heavy conditioner to deal with the dryness of coarse hair.
