Imaginative hairstyles? Please input

Just wondering if anyone knew any imaginative hairstyles which:
a) can be worn in formal situations
b) look unique & are perhaps quite elaborate
c) will keep unruly hair in place
d) do not involve cutting or use of styling products
I'm still scouting for a unique look with my hair but I don't want reactions of "hey, look at that punk bum!" I hope I'm explaining that right (and no offense to punks). Picture something more imaginative than a gelled-down, low pony-tail but not as "out there" as a green, braided mohawk or what have you.
Just for the record, my hair is 2-3 inches past shoulders, very thick and a mixture of curly and wavy.
Thank-you for your help,
Amon-Ra

Ok, this one in a low bun at the base of the neck, first you take all your hair and twist it into a tight (But not too tight, to avoid damege) twist then hold the twist over your head, while twisting a little more, to creat sort of a french twist, then wrap the tail around the twist to creat a bun, secure with bobby pins. Or possibley, if your hair is too short for a bun, just pin the french twist

If your hair is a bit unruly and you don't like using styling products then you are left with various permutations of tails and braids.
Or how about Oversurf's offering on the Long Hair Pics Page:
