Easy hair for curly guys?

Hey, I just sort of stumbled upon this place recently... I'm a 20 year old with mid-back-length hair. Its ungodly dry, light, and curly. I looked like some kind of fungus when I was growing it out, really...
Anyways, I've been at odds with it lately due to the upkeep invovled (I'm sure that's not uncommon...). Case in Point: I'm looking for tips on dealing with hair so thick you can't comb it with anything but your fingers. I'm not the kind of person whose willing to spend a lot of time fussing with it... I'm really looking for a hairstyle thats fast, easy, and keeps the mess out of the way so I can do what I want without worrying about it.
Theoretically, my attitude towards my hair makes me more of a short hair person... but with hair as light as mine, If I want it short I have to keep it REALLY short. Otherwise I look like a fungus. I'm just not willing to get it cut often enough to keep it really short! Hair just seams to grow TOO fast when you WANT to keep it short.
Anyways... I browsed the hyperboard pic gallery... some of you guys have some really cool hairstyles! Its nice to know I'm not the only member of my species O.O;;

The way I'd deal with it is using some leave in conditioner kind of like gel (holds the hair without damaging it) and just letting the hair do its thing.
No expert - but....

No expert with Curly hair, myself but conditioning when washing and using leave-in conditioner seem to be the way to better hair for those with thick curls.
Can someone help with some product suggestions?
