do I need to get the back trimmed?

I'm starting to grow out my hair after my last haircut. I've always kept it short, about 1 inch all around, but now it's about 2-3 inches. I'm not sure what I'm shooting for yet, I guess I'll just stop growing it when I'm satisfied. I'll be in college next year so it won't matter much then, but this summer I need to work and it must look decent.
It's finally starting to calm down now that I use conditioner. The bangs reach my eyes and I need to do something about tha soon, it doesn't naturally part and it gets in my eyes sometimes. What I'm asking about here is what to do with the hair on the back of my head. I've asked a few girls at school, they're the ones who encouraged me to grow it in the first place. They all said I should cut it in the back, because it's starting to look like a mullet. It's been about three weeks since the pictures in my page.
I'm thinking they're right, I need to let the top and sides catch up to the back. If I do get it trimmed in the back, should I tell the person to use scissors or clippers? Also, does it look like my hair might be wavy when it's longer or is it too early to tell?
Thanks a bunch,
Keith

Good to hear it from you guys. I really don't think it looks half bad, maybe it was just clumped together in the back the day I asked people. I'll try to get a few more pictures in a few days, since it has grown a bit since th pictures.
Thanks, this place is great,
Keith

Your hair doesn't nor will look like a mullet, not if it grows evenly. For mullet the top and sides have to be kept shorter than the back - its a common misconception these days from people who have largely never seen a mullet. (Belive me I'm a former mullet wearer.)
The hair at the back will start to show once it has about 4-5 inches, and people will mistakenly start saying it "looks like a mullet" as its the first part of your hair to look long if you leave it uncut.
Basically cos 4-5 inches at the back and your hair reaches your shoulders (perception: long), whereas on top this length will barely reach your ears (perception: still short.)
My advice, cut it, if and when you think it needs it. A lot of stylists will recommend keeping it trimmed up, to allow the top layers to catch-up, and if you want your hair one length all over then sooner or later you are going to have trim up the lower layers (back). But given you don't know how long or to what style you want to grow it then I can't really advise that you do this now.
Personaly I don't think you are in need of a trim yet - when you do thing you are ready. Give it another 3 weeks before you trim up the back. This will allow you to grow even more length to the top so you can get more of a sense of proportion of what you are doing.

This is good, three people have said it's fine as it is. Mabye I'm entering into the awkward stage. Right now I'm jus waiting for it to cover both ears. The hair on my right side seems to grow straight down whereas the other side flip out at about ear level, so it forms a "roof" over my ear, instead of flowing down over it. Yeah, that probably didn't make any sense I just realized.
I think what I'll do is just tell the stylist to make it more even. My last haircut left it too short in some places so those short hairs are preventing the overall hair mass from falling flat. By next month it should be long enough to trim off the long areas and even it out, I'm hoping. Once that's over, no more haircut for a loooooong time.
Thanks for the advice guys,
Keith

Not even close to a mullet. I'd let it go quite a while, until the back is down to or near the shoulders, then maybe trim a little to let the layers catch up. When in doubt, dont trim, you cant undo it.
As for going to the right, I had a similar problem with mine, the solution was amost too simple. I'm right handed, so I combed both sides with my right hand. Unkown to me, I was combing one side over because it was in an ackward position. In other words, make darn sure you're coming it straight down, its an easy mistake to make since you cant see it.
