Real Dilemma - With Pictures

Here is my problem. I started growing my hair out from a pretty short haircut last August. Everything has been okay (as okay as it can go with thick, 'big' hair like mine), but I just moved to a new city and am looking for a job. Now I live in Eugene OR, home of the hippies, but still I think having long hair could hurt me in the next month or so. I like my hair, but it has bugged me as it has grown and I'm not sure if it will get better if I let it get even longer. I just don't know what to do...should I cut it or let it go and take the risk of being denied a job because of it? Here are two pictures...one from August 2003 and one from April 2004. Sorry about the short-hair one...it is the only pic I have from around the time of my last cut and I wasn't planning ahead so to speak. Thanks for your opinions!

To be honest, I think you look good with both short and long hair, although to be honest, long hair suits you better. You can only look bad with short hair if (a.) You're going bald or (b.) your face is not mature enough for people to be drawn into its features and to ignore anything else. Fortunately, you have both a face that shows respect and maturity, and also I dont think your hair's gonna fall out anytime soon:p
Keep growing it, at least for a year, before you make any rash decisions!
How old are you?

I'm 24. Thanks for saying my face shows respect and maturity...now if only those interview people would see it! I want to say thanks to everyone here...I really don't want to cut it and having support is awsome.

Only in the cold, cruel world outside this message board. Try to avoid it if you can.

...to, at the very least, try to get a job without cutting first. Also, your hair is short enough where you can gel the hell out of it and slick it straight back. Sure you look like a greaser all day, but it's better than cutting your hair.

Agree with Fitmus - it is growing out well and the awkward stage is going to pas. If needs be slick it back but you do look far better with long hair.

...actually slicked mine back ALL summer in 2003 while I worked. I didn't like putting all that crap in my hair, but...I still have my hair! And this summer, I'll hopefully be able to achieve a full tail without the need for a ton of gel. BTW, the gel-slicking trick works well for a LONG time! You could probably slick it back until your hair is at least half way down your neck, as long as you use a strong-holding gel. Good luck!

Good Luck !!

As you can see in the subject line, I put the word "real" into quotes. The fundamental questions are twofold. First, do you even like your long hair. Second, will your present hairstyle keep you from getting a job.
About whether you like your hair or not. This is your decision, of course. Longer hair is certainly more maintenance, no question. However, there are advantages like keeping you warmer in the winter. Also, in my humble opinion, you look much better with longer hair and I'm NOT saying that because we're on the long hair board.
Second, not knowing how many interviews you've had over the years (my guess is not many) this is what I have to say, having been on BOTH sides of the interviewing desk. The most important thing is how you present yourself. You should be well groomed, wear a smile, shake hands solidly, look the person in the eyes when you speak to him/her, etc. When I say groomed, wear a nice suit and tie (get a girlfriend to help you chose if needed). Add a little product to your hair if you want. I suggest some mousse or liquid wax. At your current length, slicking it back with a gallon of gel might be a bit much. Try it, though, it might look OK.
Bottom line is you're are showing your potential boss that you're going to be an asset to their company, be hard-working, easy-going, etc. Your hair really won't matter at all.
Best wishes and let us know how it goes.
ToddB
