think VERY carefully and PREPARE

right, well i've just spent about 6 hours dreadlocking my hair with the help of my sister and a mate, but then my sister decided to quit and my mate had to go home, so i tried to continue by myself but i was exhausted so i decided i'd relax and carry on in the morning.
so anyhow, i went to bed, woke up, and i had changed my mind completely. there was no way i was gonna be able to make decent dreads out of my hair without taking another full day, and on my own, especially since the majority of what still needed to be done was on the back of my head, where naturally i don't have a good view of. so now i've just got out of the shower, having spent three hours and a whole bottle of conditioner untangling my hair and restoring it to its former glory.
well thats my story, its fair to say it went tits up. don't get me wrong, i absolutely love the way dreads look, and hopefully one day soon i'll try again, but my advice to anyone on this board who is thinking of dreading their hair is to make sure they do it right, and they finish it in one sitting. you definitely neeeed someone who is willing to help, especially with the back of your head
on a lighter note, the products i used were from www.knottyboy.com, and i fully recommend them, plus all their stuff is natural
sorry about the beastly lenght of this post, but i just thought i'd share my rather unsuccessful experience

I think if you want dreads you should go to a salon and have a professional do it :/

The problem I believe is that you were expecting instant dreads within the same day. My understanding of dreads based on a link that was posted in a thread below, is that it takes time to create these dreads, like weeks, not one day. It takes time for them to develop and tighten up and become stronger. You may want to find the link below and check out the site. I remember it giving details about the process.
Good luck!

i appreciate what you're saying, but it wasn't that at all. i understand that the process of backcombing-twisting-waxing just matts the hair and holds it in place, ready to develop into actual dreads over the next few months. i wasn't expecting anything instant and i was pleased with the results i was getting. but my grief was because this actual process was taking a hell of a lot longer than i had been told by all the websites i've visited, and plus it was becoming almost impossible to do the back of my head on my own
all i'm saying is make sure you enslave a fair few of your friends, rent some films, section your hair up before you start, and do the back first, cos if you don't you'll have problems and become increasingly demotivated
bye for now
