why...?

The thing that really annoys me about having curly hair is that I used to have straight hair 10 years ago. Being 18 years old, I would guess that maybe puberty had something to do with the change, but I can't pinpoint exactly when my hair started to go curly. Unless it was five or six years ago, it really couldn't be puberty, so what else then? All I can figure is that maybe a change in diet or something had an impact. I used to drink milk like crazy--I could go through a gallon a day easily. Now I never drink milk--water is my main drink now.
Anyway, if it *was* puberty, I'd still like to know why exactly it happened. It seems strange that something like that would happen. Maybe it was just stress?
Oh well...
thanks,
vhvai

My hair is straight when short, and goes curly when long.

almost everyone's hair is "straight" when short, assuming your not black. You are able to comb it straight until it gets to a certain length. You can prolong the "straight" length with products

Thanks, but that's not what I mean. I know that most peoples' hair is straight when it's short but I have had mine longer before, and it used to be straight, not curly.
As far as changes in diet are concerned, there have been no real weight fluctuations, so I don't think weight loss/gain has anything to do with it. Maybe less calcium, since I haven't been drinking much milk?
Thanks for posting, and if anyone has anymore ideas it'd be cool to see some more about it here.
thanks,
vhvai

Ive often wondered the same thing, about diet and milk n stuff. I came to the conclusion that its like my stylist said, at puberty hair changes on some. Think of all the kids you know with nice straight hair that are your age, how many of them drank much milk as teens, and now? Not very many? I dont really like the taste of milk but im Considering doing an experiemnt, a few glassses of milk every day for a month and see if the 5/8 inch at my scalp is nicer hair than the rest

I would say that milk does affect your hair's healthiness. I drink about a gallon every 2 days.
Looking back to about a year ago when I didn't drink it as much, my hair was thinner and seemed
to curl easier. My facial hair grows faster also.

How old are you? Do you think its any less dry or frizzy now? If it even was to begin with..

I'm 16. It does seem less dry but it was never frizzy. That could also be a result of using cold water when I wash my hair.

hehe... I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to start going for 3/4 glasses a day maybe and check it out in a couple months. If you do the same we can compare results. lol

When i was a kid I had hair like most kids, moist, soft, and manageable, and somehwat wavy. When i got to about 5th grade, <10 or 11 yrs old> my hair began to change "almost overnight" my mom says. it became difficult to comb and didnt stay in place and "curlier".
by 6th grade it was a total dried out, frizzy, unmaneagable mess. I couldnt even get a comb thru it. Unless it was soaking wet it looked almost like a fro. Now im 17 it took me years but I figured out a way to de-frizz and moisturize and even straighten my hair. Until a year or so ago i thought the problem was that my hair was "curly" but that isnt it at all, its because my hair is weak and dry and frizzy, it holds no moisture. Did your hair actualyl get currly, or is it dry and frizzy?

It's hard to know why we go through "hair changes", but quite a few of us seem to. Here is a list of mine:
Through most of these years I've actually had hair strands that were straight, that were curly, that were wavy, that curled in spirals, and that were a mixture of all of these. I've also had strands that were black, brown, blond, and gray. I feel what has changed was the proportion of these types and colors, and that is what affected my hair's overall apparent texture and color.
Hair in my beard also has had all these shapes and colors, though the beard strands were thicker and their curls and waves tighter.
I will add that my hair has always been curlier at the ends, no doubt due to the situation that its weight causes it to be straighter higher up:
My hair's appearance will also differ depending on how long it's been since I washed it, how many times since then that I've combed it, how dry the weather is, how windy it has been, and who knows what. :-) You can see that from the photos at the bottom of my web page:
