The wet, loosely slicked back look?

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking here for a few months. I'm 19 and have been growing my hair out since last August; I've never had long hair before, but I'm excited about trying it and am determined not to cut it for a long time.
Right now my hair is about 3 inches long on top and a little shorter on the sides and back. I really don't know what to do with it right now. When I had short hair I gelled it into a spiky look that I really liked, I kept doing that after my last haircut and it worked OK for a few months, but now it's too long and the gel doesn't have the same effect.
I've basically been doing two things since that stopped working:
1) "the wild look," where I put mousse in, and then blow dry while hairspraying until it sticks up and out all over the place, then I gel it a little to make it look slightly neater
or
2) parting it in the middle, using gel to hold the bangs up off of my face
The problem with #1 is that it takes too long and the results are unpredictable; some days it turns out great, on others it looks horrible. #2 on the other hand is quick and lasts all day, but I don't really like the way it looks.
What I'd really like to do is slick it back so it looks kind of wet and stays in place, but doesn't look hard and stiff. I've tried to do this with KMS gel, but I haven't gotten it to work at all. If I put in a lot of gel, it holds my hair in place but gives it that hard look I don't want; if I put in less gel, the hair tends to naturally part in the middle as it dries, and I hate that too.
Can anyone help me figure out how to do this? I'm frustrated because I've seen guys on TV who look exactly like I want to, but I have no idea how to get my hair to look like that. What other products can I try? If anyone has any product/brand recommendations, please post!
Thanks a lot for reading all of this, and thanks to everyone who posts here! This is a great board.
