Need a Trim (and other questions)

Hey, guys. I'm sixteen years old and I've been growing my hair out since March or May this year and the hair in the front is now long enough to touch my lower lip... It looks extremely puffy (I have very thick hair) and it's annoying as hell when it brushes against my cheek... It gives me a very haggard look, which I HATE. My mother suggested a trimming but I'm afraid that they'll take out too much (I'm trying to grow nipple length hair) and it'll take me a whole lot of time to grow back...
Do you think I should just live with it or should I get a trim now? Or should I wait until it's at a certain length (say, my shoulder?) then trim it?
And here are a few more questions to ask:
-Does wax damage hair? If it does then what else should I use to tame my hair?
-Is long hair on men regarded as a feminine trait? This isn't really going to affect my decision on growing my hair out, really, I'm just curious.
-I have a 'crown' (that's what my teacher calls it. It's the thing people have on the head- the twirly spot) in the front of my head as well as the back, and I wonder if you think the crown will still be visible after growing my hair long (I really really like the crown in front my head. A respectible barber who's been cutting hair for more than 60 years told me he's never seen one and heard that it's a one in a million case)?
-I'm going to be in eleventh grade in August, do you think I'll have the mid-back hair length I'm trying to grow by the time I go to college?
Thanks!
Love,
TurboBoy

I'm just curious, how long was your hair when you decided to start growing it out?

oh, i forgot, don't get a trim =) I'm in the same stage as you, and I can't even think about trimming it now. Going to wait until the front is shoulder length, at least, and then try to get all the same length.

I'm not so sure... Um... About eye level, maybe? Because I remembered that I decided to start growing my hair because I was at a point where I had to choose between cutting my hair to get rid of the annoyance of hair poking my eye or growing it so it's pass my eye.

Actually my mom asked me if I wanted to grow my hair out, so I never had problems in the parental department... I guess you could tell them it's your head and they can shove off their comments? LOL, that's a bit harsh. Sorry, but I really can't help...
