Serious doubts

Hello,
I last had my hair cut in December (except for a bit of tidying up at the back by my eldest sister), I would guess it is approximately 4.5 to 5 inches long (so I suppose slightly less than average growth). In that period I have experienced cycles of doubt, but at the moment I'm seriously wondering wether it is worth it.
My hair is extremly thick and curly and, although it is long enough, it does not hang in my eyes but is more likely to stand almost straight up; this is especially bad in the morining before I've washed and dried it (or under the influence of wind and rain).
So my questions are:
1) Should I persevere in the belief that it will reach a critical mass and start to get easier to handle (i.e. is this always the case, no matter what type of hair I have). Also how much longer do I have to wait!!!.
2) I've managed to hold off getting a trim by trusting the advice on this board. But surely would it not benefit from some sort of cut, possibly to remove the bulk which I think is the main casue of the problems.
3) Is getting it straightened an option? And if so at what length? Can the amount of straightness be chosen?
I've always had very short hair, so any advice is welcome.
thanks,
Graeme

I had the same problems you are having, and getting my hair relaxed did the trick. Now I never have to use the straightening iron even when my hair goes from soaking wet to dry. I am also at 5" length and still growing.

Hi Dave...just curious what kind of process did you have to "straigthen" your hair...was it done at a salon? When would you have to have it done again...assuming you would want the new growth treated as well. Were you pleased with the results?

Got it done at the Salon by a stylist. The base solution used can feel like your scalp is on fire, depending on how sensitive your skin is (I felt like Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal: Black!) , plus a red rash. Your hair feels terrible for a few days since you aren't supposed to wash it for 48 hours. But overall I think it was worth it. Now I never have to use a straightening iron, and all the horrible "flip curls" are gone. The stylist said when mine gets longer, gravity will prevent waves from being a problem. The tips of my hair were the big problem, but relaxing it fixed them.

Hey Graeme,
Sounds to me like the awkward phase is trying your patience. I too have curly hair that can get a tad unruly. For me the answer is gel. I put it in wet, style and wait for it to dry. I try to not brush my hair when it is dry, as this just makes it poofier. Remember, trimming is the way to make short hair neater, it is not the way to make long hair neater. With long hair control is the key. If you trim, it will just prolong the awkward phase, making your ultimate goal of long hair just that much more unlikely. Remember the two week rule, if think that you want to cut, then mark the calendar. If you go for two weeks without ever changing your mind, then go ahead and cut. But if you even once during that time enjoy your long hair or think that you do want it long, then keep it growing and thank yourself for having a safety net working for you!
