School sucks

I'm steamin'. School's only just started and I got thrown out of science class today coz the teacher said that tieing my hair back in a ponytail werent good enough. She said that the new rule since this year is that hair must not be below the collar of our lab coats or 'flippy floppy loose' she said 'like a ponytail'. She got one girl to give me a big clamp thing and another one gave me a large clip thing and they were smilin' and laughin' big time. But I said that I ain't wearin' my hair like them girls and she dissed me and I dissed her. Then she threw me out. She said I ain't comin' back until I do what she wants. She yelled out that I even got ta wear my hair like that in detention tomorrow or I can keep comin' back for that too. I told my mom and she said it's in the book. Can they make me do this. Don't I have rights here.

Get several more hair ties and put them all along your ponytail, so it ends up being one solid "tail." If possible, tuck it in the neckhole of your shirt, too.

I'm a Science teacher.
Our rule is that long hair must be tied back.
Wear the clip, if that's what your school wants. Or maybe a hairnet. How much do you want to keep your hair?

The more things change the more they stay the same. In the late
60s I got in trouble for having long hair. My best advice: stick to
your guns, don't give in, and strive to get good grades in school.
If you get good grades then they are limited to how much they can
complain.
May be for safety reasons

Was the class doing any experiments that day?
Loose hair is not a good idea in a science lab... believe me, you don't want to get a whiff of burning hair smell.. ewww!

I'm sure the rule is for safety reasons. If you don't like wearing the clip, which is actually a very reasonable solution, the problem is yours, not the school's. There are some other possibilities you may wish to consider, though. You could wear a tuque or baseball cap (would probably have to be reversed). Or you could wear your hair in a bun or hairnet. You could try to see if your teacher would accept wearing it in a tight braid worn under your shirt, but it sounds like that may not be a possibility.
What does the teacher require of the girls? Sounds like the same thing.
As for wearing it that way in detention, I'm sure that is because of how you handled the situation so far.
As far as rights go, they are not making you cut your hair. They're only making you control it for safety reasons, and it sounds like the same rule is being applied to everybody.
Oh, one other suggestions. Go to a biker shop and get one of those leather hair wraps. That should do the job plus make you look macho to boot. It sounds like this is important to you.

I agree with Victor. At least it sounds like this standard applies to everyone equally. I had to wear my hair up when I worked at Hollywood Video despite many female employees (including a manager) not even bothering to actually comb their hair, let alone put it up. I got sick of braiding and clips and was going to quit until a friend showed me one of those easy-braiding tools they sell on tv. This particular one was basically a piece of semi-flexible material that you wind your hair around, then crimp the ends to hold it in place. I don't remember the name (been a long time since I used it, it's a bit uncomfortable for long periods of time) but you might be happy with the look.

Losing your temper won't help matters! If you want to keep your hair (and you should) then you're going to have to take safety precautions normally associated with long hair. Sorry, but there's no way round that. Using 2 ponytail ties (one at the base and one at the ends) should keep your hair out of harm's way. If your science teacher still objects, then I can only suggest that you get your folks to speak with the principal.

I agree with the rest of the guys. You must find some way of restraining your hair during science classes, but only for safety reasons. Cutting your hair is not an option, no one has the right to tell you to cut it if you really don't want to do it.

Put the clip in your hair for Science Lab, and make sure you don't miss any English classes this year! If the girls with long hair have to wear clips, your teacher has every right to make you wear a clip to keep your hair up. I am sure this is for safety reasons. I imagine you use bunson burners, and various chemicals. I would think that your instructor is trying to keep everyone with long hair from becoming human torches!
If you think these particular clips are girly, just get one of those plastic clamp type clips. Make a ponytail out of your long hair, flip it up, and put the clamp on. No big deal!

See if it's okay to wear a cap of your favorite team or something and tuck all your hair up in it. Tie it well first to make sure no strands fall out and send your teacher into a heart attack. After class, pull off your cap, brush your hair, and you're as good as new. Believe me, I've had to wear my hair like that for many jobs, and it was worth it as opposed to losing my hair. And in your case, you don't want it to catch fire and lose it all that way...it may never grow back if your head is one big burn scar!

Perhaps you should skip the science class and sign up for two English classes instead.

But I said that I ain't wearin' my hair like them girls ...
There is a solution that I've seen that would still give you the whole "up do" thing your teacher seems to want without it look girly. It may or may not work for you though if your hair isn't quite long enough for it. I have some little hair things ( I have no idea what they're actoually called ) that are basicly sort of an oval shaped hard piece of leather about 4 or 5 inches wide that has a hole at each end (sometimes they're made with some kind of design in the middle too) and a little stick that comes with it ( they're pretty small and inconspicous, not the big guady ones that seem popular with girls lately). What you do is sort of twist (all in one direction) your ponytail as tightly as is comfortable for you (the tighter it is, the harder it will be for your hair to come undone, but you don't want to be so rough that you damage your hair) and then sort of hold the twisted "line" of hair up against the back of your head with one hand. Then you bring part of the twist back down, so that it curves at the highest point and comes back the way you did the first part; this is held right next to the part of your hair that went up and is also held against the back of your head (this is sort of how a french twist works, but it doesn't look the same way in the end). If you're worried about random "loose ends" of hair sticking out - this part is more a matter of how you want it to look rather than whether or not the hair stays where it's supposed to - at this point you can sort of tuck the ends into/under/behind the twist and they should stay .With one hand holding your hair in place, use the other one to position the leather thing about two thirds (or more) of the way up the twist in such a way that the two holes are on either side of the twisted hair. Then, with one hand you can hold the leather piece against the back of you're head, with all the twisted hair "inside" of it. Then you slide the stick piece in; go through the first hole (doesn't matter which side you start with) with the stick angled so that it's going behind the twist and also behind/through/whatever the hair that's not part of the twist ( you know, the hair that when you make a ponytail isn't part of the tail, the portion of your hair that would be above the hair tie and just sort of lays flat against your head ), then angle the stick back again so that it pokes out the other hole in the leather piece. It's important that you get the stick under the hair that's not part of the twist or it'll "fall down" when you're done; also, it's has to be more than just a few hairs or you'll probably break those few, or at the very least, be really uncomfortable because the weight of all the hair that you just put up wil be pulling on those few hairs. At this point you're done, and your hair stays up without looking too "girly".
I promise, this isn't nearly as complicated as it sounds; it just take a little bit of practice to get the hang of and then it's quick and easy.
Another thing to try(again, it depends on how long your har is) is to "double up" your ponytail. Start out putting the hair tie on the way you normally do, but instead of just wrapping it 2 or 3 time around the hair ( or however many ), the last time you pull the hair through the tie, don't pull it all the way out, only maybe half or two thirds ( this is another one of those things where you have to figure out what's best for your own length ). This makes your ponytail sort of curve back on itself - it's a lot easier that a bun but has the same general effect for short to medium length hair - and it's all done in no more time than it take to do a ponytail, and only uses one hair tie.
Also, if you've got straight hair thats not super long yet, just make your ponytail so that the base is a lot higher up on your head, and then the "tail" part won't be past your collar. Yeah, sure, this is generally seen as a more girly way of doing a ponytail, but I've got a guy friend who wears his hair like that almost everyday and it doesn't look feminine at all on him.
PS I've also seen versions of this sort of thing that used hard plastic pieces (black, not pink or something) instead of the leather peice. I haven't tried those but it seems to me that it would be a lot easier if what you're using has some "give" to it, especially if you haven't had much practice at it.

Oh, give me a break. All they want you to do is wear your hair up for one class, for safety reasons. Hey this could very well protect you from losing all of your hair in a horrific manner. My advice is to put it up and shut up.

Why should you be able to wear your hair loose and us girls have to wear it up. We don't all like it either, but the rules are there to protect you and your hair (think about that).
Put it up (literally) and shut up or cut it. If I was you and I was being nice I would say wear something inconspicuous like a dark clip to keep your ponytail up or do like some of the others have said loop your ponytail.
But with your attitude, if I were your teacher now, I would make you wear the biggest clamp I could find or make you wear it in some sort of elegant up sweep just for your mouth.
I wish I was in your class!
