Hey,
People please help me!!! I am a 15 year old male and I have always loved rock music. I have also wanted long hair. I want my hair to look like Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes. Here is a recent pic of him (i figured i should be more specific than "long hair")http://rollingstone.com/photos/bigphoto.asp?gid=7232&s=1&e=9&seq=3&cf=
Please look at that...ok...
Here are my problems. My hair is super super thick, i cant do anything with it. 2... My hair is "puffy". When I get up in the morning and also later in the day my hair "poofs" out, kinda afro like. It is also very dry too. Now that winter is closing in, the humidity here in Northern KY is gone. I tried to grow in the summer and i was just a puffy mess.... Now givin all that I have givin you (the reader, lol)can anyone tell me what to do???? products, what to tell the barber or, stylist, if you wanna be a prick about it. So people help me!!!! bill

Here is my response to a question very similar to the one you're asking.

Bill:
Here's what I would offer, though it may not be what you want to hear. First, just let your hair grow. You will join the ranks of everyone here who has been through an awful awkward stages. I have thick hair, also, and gel and spray can help.
Second, forget who else you want to look like. Let your hair grow and let it look like you. I guarantee you that as long as you are trying to get your hair on your head and face to look like a pic of someone else, you will be miserable. Even those people don't look like their pics most of the time. Pics are shot for promotionals and with lots of staging. If you really want long hair, let it be yours, your look. And the reality may be that that is not really what you want, or that going through the awkward stage while you are in high school is too much hassle right now. That's fine, too. Wait until you are older. Plenty of us have.

Robert, regarding your second point, you are so RIGHT ON! After 20+ years in the men's grooming industry I still can't figure why anyone wants to look like "someone else" instead of himself...why a "follower" instead of a "leader". Besides, no two heads of hair can ever be exactly the same...

Its not that I want to be him or look like him or something. My hair is very similar to his and i wanted to show what style and what i wanted it to look like.
