puffy hair and wet combing?

Hello,
I've been growing my hair for ~11 months now. Its really curly and can get quite puffy...(in fact I get that i look alot like the creator of South Park.) Anyway, my question is this: I generally comb my hair in the morning when its wet after a shower. It seems the easiest way to detangle (my hair really can get tangled), and then I can apply some gel or mousse to keep the frizz down a little. Is combing my hair while wet making the problem worse? Should I just detangle some with my fingers but otherwise leave it uncombed?
Thanks.

Sorry bro, but you're going about your curly hair all wrong. First of all, you should use a good slick conditioner (try Aussie Moist, get it at your local drug store) when detangling, and you should use a wide toothed comb while doing so. After detangling, you are done with combs, period. Rinse and squeeze excess water gently by pulling your hair back, like in a ponytail. Don't ruffle curly hair. Then blot your hair gently with a towel. Remember not to rub, that'll ruffle your hair. After blotting, then you could apply your hair products. Trust me, if you have curly hair you NEED hair products. For the dry look without all the frizz, try American Crew leave-in conditioner (available at mall salon stores), or use gel for the wet look. I recommend the dry look. Apply evenly with your hands, and try not to separate your curls by raking you hair with your fingers. Just pretend you're slicking hair back with the product evenly applied on your palms. Style by moving your curls to where you want them to stay, then let air dry. Good luck!

In response to your "hair warping" message...
I find that the best thing to do in the morning is, as soon as you wake up just run your fingers through your dry hair a few times until you've covered your whole head and got out all the tangles, it should be really easy if you're gentle and do it slowly. Then use a wide toothed comb while the hair is wet (say, from the shower). It should be much easier to comb while it's wet after finger combing it when it's dry in the first place and this should solve the hair warping problem. REMEMBER: Be slow and careful, that's the most important thing.
Happy new year!

Avoid wet combing

Wet combing will just add curls to your hair. Your hair is most delicate when it's wet, and combing will warp it into unnatural shapes. Let the water from the shower push it all back in a "slicked" position instead of combing it back. Then blot it with the towel and let the rest air-dry itself.

Although I agree with everything else, I have to disagree with the hair warping while your hair is wet. You can comb hair whether it's wet or dry, the warping part comes when you try to force your way through tangles. When you do that, the hair gets overly stretched and bounce back warped. So although I don't recommend using a fine toothed comb in the shower, it's ok to use a wide toothed comb. I'm not sure if it's you but I think I remember your post about your hair warping, then going back to normal after you stopped combing while it's wet. First of all, warped hair is permanent, so the reason for your wavy hair is likely genetics. Second of all, it would take a lot of harsh treatment to get the MAJORITY of the you hair warped, since it's the individual hairs that warp, not whole sections, let alone your whole head. So as long as you're not pulling through snags or using a brush or a regular comb while your hair is wet, you should be ok. Pe@ce!
