Setback?

Minor setback, emergency family gathering is forcing me to get a trim back to the looks OK stage. My hair is now about 4 inches long and is entering the awkward stage... you can't do a thing with it. Puffs out like bozo the clown on the sides cuz there's not enough length to pull back and not enough weight to drop down... I hope my stylist can do something with out setting me back more than a month or so of growth! Advice anyone? I am just getting use to being able grab a fist full of my own hair! Drat!

If it's not too late, reconsider a different style, not a different length. Since you are willing to do something a little desperate for the family gathering, then use gel, or spray, or moose, or a combination of the three to get your hair into a passable look for the event. Go with the wet look. So it's different. I was in the same spot last spring, and I was going through interviews for a new job! It worked. Good luck.

Whatever you do, don't cut it. Cut my hair for family gatherings,
hated it afterwards. Try whatever you have to
to avoid cutting it. You'll regret cutting it. Try gel or
something similar.

How long will the family gathering last? An hour? An evening? A day? No matter which of those it is, it's unreasonable for anyone to expect you'd change your appearance for months just to look a certain way for one day. It's on your shoulders to tell them it's unreasonable.
If you don't, there will be one little family event after another. Once they figure out you'll trash your looks forever just for an hour-long event, they will come up more as often as they think your hair is too long. There will be your sister's birthday, your Aunt Martha's visit, someone coming to dinner, etc. ad nauseum. Any time they think they'll drag out the camera, and you know how often that is, their eyes will be on you. Hey, you get the picture.
As Nancy Reagan said: "Just say no."

If you're really desparate, you could ask your stylist to set your hair in rollers for a curly style (just a set, not a perm). Curls "use up" a lot of hair and will make it look shorter. Afterwards, you could shampoo it out and go back to normal.

Good idea . . . or you could have a stylist roll it up in smaller perm rods with a setting lotion (not perm solution!). When it dries, you'll have tighter curls than rollers can give you, then you just comb it out with a pick, press it down a tad with your hands, apply a bit of hairspray to keep things in place, and it'll look sorta like an afro until you wash it out. Won't get you a spot in GQ, but it's a respectable hairstyle . . . much better than cutting it off . . .
Good luck,

Get your hair wet, work in a generous handful of gel and comb it back. You will spend the day looking like you have wet hair, but at the end of the day you will still have your hair. This tactic works for all sorts of 'Special Occasions'.
