Stylists - Who Can You Trust?
Posted by Jibba Jabba on January 12, 2002 at 22:53:51: Previous Next
I know it's against the advice of a lot of people here, but I'm growing my hair out, and I want to get it trimmed every 2 or 3 months so I can experience as little of the "awkward phase" as possible. However, I'm worried about who to choose. I don't want someone who'll ignore what I want and chop off my hair. Is there any way to tell what kind of stylist is trustworthy? Should I look for a guy stylist?
And also, what do you do about the furry hair on the back of your neck?

Well I can recommend Bruce Gallagher, a contributor to this board and I've visited him in Portsmouth NH, and he's given some great advice.
Cheers,
John.

"...but I'm growing my hair out, and I want to get it trimmed every 2 or 3 months so I can experience as little of the "awkward phase" as possible..."
i have seldon seen such blatant contradiction.
if you want to experience as little of the awkward phase as possibe the answer is NOT to trim every 2 or 3 months as that plan of action will GREATLY prolong the phase. even the most conscientious stylist will be hard-pressed not to deal you a significant setback when all you are presenting is 1 to 1½ inches of new growth at each trim.
if your goal is longer hair, a better maintenance cut schedule would be once every 6 months (twice a year). the quickest route out of the awkward stage is to grow beyond it. any cut is a step backward.

Is it just me or this doesn't make sense? You want to experience as little of the "awkward phase" as possible so you will trim your hair every 2 or 3 months?? Read what j.s. Wrote, he's right.

EXCUSE ME FOR BEING SO "BLATANT".........DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR!!!!!!!!
I ALSO AGREE, THAT IN "TRIMMING" YOUR HAIR, YOU ARE GOING TO "PROLONG" THE "AWKWARD PHASE".......THINK ABOUT IT, THE ONLY WAY TO GET PAST THE "AWKWARD PHASE" IS TO: "G R O W" YOUR HAIR BEYOND THE LENGTH OF THE "AWKWARDNESS"........

Here's my 2-cents. Don't get it cut or you will vastly prolong the awkward stage. I had my last "trim" in August and I regret it to this day.
However, I did have some split ends cut off by a local stylist who promised to only cut the ends. I don't believe she trimmed more than a quarter-inch at any part of my head. She did as promised and my hair looked better. Hopefully I'll be past this stage in a few more months - my last real cut was last April.
A photo of my hair is on my site - to the right of the logo - tinted blond for the page, but is actually white.

What kind of stylists can you trust?
None, zip, zilch, nadda, the big goose egg.
I've been to many stylists, given them exact
measurements. Still they chop off what they
want.
The bottom line: all stylists suck.
Either forgo the trims or get your
girl freind to do it.

There are stylists that you can trust with long hair but finding them is the trick. Quite often you have to train them to deal with longer hair but if you really know what you want with any length you have to do that anyway.
On my site I have a list of stylists/salons that are known to be good with long hair. So far the list is still quite small but if you have any additions just email them to me. Make sure that you know for a first hand fact that they are experienced enough to listen to clients specific requests because this is a resource for traveling longhairs or aspiring hair growers to use.
I also have some simple tips about how to communicate with stylists about your hair. It really comes down to clear communication...both ways.

Do they go for years (like some on this board seem to do) without a trim? For most women, their hair looks good as it is growing out. Most men, it looks just disgusting and silly. So many men just let it grow without any styling, that a lot people equate long hair on men as unkempt and disgusting. I believe this is a large part of why society doesn't accept long hair on men. Who wants to look at long, ugly hair (on a man or woman)?
What's the difference? Women get trims about every 10 weeks. And guess what? Their hair still gets longer!
Sorry guys, but most hair pics on this board just don't look very nice. If your only goal is length, then it doesn't matter. But if you want nice looking long hair, take care of it. That includes trims.
Find a great stylist who is in your corner and will help you achieve your hair goals!

Trims every 10 weeks and the hair just keeps getting longer! What
magic potion do you have that none of the rest of us have? Some of us
would like to have long hair in our lifetime.

no magic potions but:
If you sleep on a silk or satin pillow case you will prevent damage to your hair. Also AVOID sun exposure(wear dew rag or other), salt water, chlorine AND hard water.(If you have hard water then use a shampoo that will remove mineral deposits KMS has one called PHIRST and a nice rince which is called PHINISH, I also use their Trilogy leave in conditioner which I LOVE!) Never comb from the top down, comb from the bottom. Do not stretch your hair when it is wet, especially if still hot from shower. Best to let it towel dry a bit then comb out with wide tooth comb. NEVER use a blow dryer. Get a trim at the very LEAST twice a year or you will regret it. Never use rubber elastics or coated ones with the little metal part. Use only cloth covered scrunchies when pulling back for a ponytail. Eat good foods, and avoid stress.

What magic potion do YOU have? You can just not trim your hair, yet have it look good (month after month, year after year?)
I'd like to know about this!
If you only get 1/8 inch trimmed each time, yes...the hair still gets longer. If your hair only grows 1/8 of an inch in 10 weeks, I'm sorry to tell you that you'll never see long hair.
Like I said, do you want long, health, nice looking hair? Or do you just want length, no matter how offensive it looks? (I've never understood why some men like having long, nasty looking hair).

Long hair does not look disgusting or silly on men. There is a lot
more men than women with hair that's in bad condition but it's not
usually due to lack of trimming, but due to unsufficient
conditioning.
: What's the difference? Women get trims about every 10 weeks. And

I am a woman, and I only get trims when I don't want my hair to get
any longer - definitely not when I am trying to grow it out. Most
women I know don't trim their hair while trying to grow it out,
though there are some who do.
There are some split ends, of course, but their amount tends to be
the same regardless of whether it's been 4 days or 4 years since the
last trim.
