Long Hair and Lord of the rings

Do you think there's a possibility with Long Hair for men becoming mainstream again due to the success of "Lord of the rings:Fellow ship of the ring"?

Agreed. Film fads come and go too quickly. Remember Mel Gibson in "Braveheart" or Tom Cruise in ( ? forget the title) a while back with shoulder length hair ? It didn't catch on then unfortunately either.
If longhair on men is ever to stand any chance of becoming mainstream in Society, and I really want it to just as much as anyone else, then other ways have to be found. If for example it could be shown to be a real stress buster, psychologically helpful, therapeutic, a relaxant and so on by the medical profession then that's a whole lot different and would stand a far better chance of success I believe. Because it would then be saving an employer money (salaries) in valuable guys genuinely forced to take days off from overwork.... fatigue, burnt out, exhaustion etc.
I also believe that this is one of the main reasons genuine long-haired loving ladies, not those just following the latest fashions and trends, grow theirs long too....?
True or not ladies....? :-)

just as a side note. long hair has not been mainstream for almost 100 years now (unfortunately) it really started in 1914 at the start of WWI. the army required men to have short hair for battle. after the draft of men in the US in 1917, men started keeping their hair VERY short. i hate to say it but short hair has been mainstream for about 5 generations now. i dont know if long hair will ever be popular again because short hair is so ingrained in our culture. i hope this changes though.

Me too ! :-)
But was long hair mainstream before that ? My history is really useless so the only vague bits I can quickly remember are the Buffalo Bill types and some US army officers - Custer and so on. Otherwise Victorian pictures of men always seemed to show long beards and sideburns. But the women !! they had really long hair ! :-)
The only other major mainstream period I can think of was in Europe/ Italy during the Renaissance and that's only because of their paintings !! Sad isn't it !
Fuck the mainstream!!!

Do whatever you want. If you want long hair you are allowed to have it and it doesn´t matter what anyone thinks. Just be yourself!
agreed, but..

the problem is sometimes with employers though. when you need a job sometimes you have to conform to asinine rules.
I've worked for employers who use to insist on their male employees having short hair just because 'it's the style' and the usual 'no one where's long hair anymore' and 'the hippie days are gone'.
the usual narrowminded viewpoint.
anyone of you ever experience this type of situation on the job?

I agree too. But I was forced to cut once years ago for a well-paid job when I got into difficulties and the bank were about to call in a huge personal loan. I needed that job/ money badly unfortunately but it's the only time I've ever been caught. Since then I try to limit all borrowings to no more than 10% of my net earnings, anything rather than submit to 'cutting blackmail' again !! Freedom of choice is just too important.
This is mainly why I detest the shorthaired mainstream's non-think kneejerk reactions just because a whole lot of them just happen to control the purse strings/ salaries. It's always going to give them the opportunity (and sadistic pleasure !) to try to force financially weaker responsible guys who really want to grow their hair to give in, knowing they are stuck with a mortgage, kids etc.
That's why they've got to change not us THEN we can start refusing to employ all short haired a**holes !
"Sorry pal, no-one wears shorthair anymore. Your bald convict days are long gone"......:-)

Probably the best thing to do is to become Financially self-reliant. in other words, become your own boss rather then work for a corporation that has rules that discriminate against those of the Male gender who prefer to wear longer hairstyles.

We as a society are STILL trying to recover from the damage that was wrought by the Victorian era. But look at almost any period before that, and you'll see long hair. Look at a $2.00 bill. I also know long hair was very much mainstream in Greece during their revolution (1821), but now they're just as short hair insistant as we are!
That said, I don't give a rat's rump whether it's mainstream or not! I have long hair, full beard, wear kilts and bi-lateral earrings. Do I care about 'mainstream'?

to answer your question. i have done some research in this area since it is of interest to me. before WWI, it was common to see men with hair over their ears and mustaches or beards. mark twain would be a good example of this. this type of hairstyle started from about 1815-1915 (roughly) however, you will see people who had much longer hair like buffalo bill, george custer, wild bill hicock, etc... although long hair like this wasnt as common it was not unacceptable. it was not a big deal to have hair of this length. my point was, after WWI it became socially UNACCEPTABLE (unfortunately) for men to have long hair. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE OTHER STATEMENTS ABOUT NOT CARING WHAT IS SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE OR NOT. i just wanted to respond about the lord of the rings question. i dont think long hair will come back in "style" (unfortunately) because of the history of short hair. p.s. before 1815 men wore their hair very long in ponytails, the colonial style of dress was fashionable- george washington, thomas jefferson, etc....

i have seen "the vikings" portrayed as having huge and really long hair and huge and really long beards. that is the way to go. in my opinion, cutting/trimming is a waste of time, and straight/even hair looks bad. just let it grow to where it wants to. :)

Despite the fact that the film got 13 academy award nominations I
don't see it happening, escpecially with the patriotism movement.
As someone with waist length hair I want it to happen but it won't.

It takes too much work for most people to grow their hair to any decent length for it to become a mainstream thing or a quick fad.
