Maintenance and Trimming?

I'm a first time poster on here but you guys know what your talking about so I have a few questions.
Okay firstly my hair is at the "getting in ears and (almost) eyes" stage.
I was just wondering whether you would recommend maintanence cuts?
And is there any long term differences if you have them early on or not?
Also my hair has officially formed a 100% mullet, should I do something about it or just let it grow?
I really don't mind what your answers are, I don't mind either way.
Cheers

Oh yeah I forgot to ask, Are maintenance cuts/trims essential or is it just a matter of preference?

At the risk of being castigated by others on this board, I think trimming helps. True, hair doesn't grow from the ends, but just like the end of a pencil, it gets it's worst wear there. The end is the oldest part of your hair and has seen more sun, dryness, chemicals, etc.
The best my hair has ever looked was after I cut 6" off (from 24" to 18"). The older hair had not been as carefully conditioned as the newer hair and I went from frizzy and straggly to sleek and shiny overnight.

But for the sake of growing it as quickly as possible I should let it grow without trims right?

Well, yeah, if you wanna grow it out as quickly as possible, don't get it trimmed. But is it better to look shaggy for 2 years or look decent for 2 and a half? That's the way I see it. I'm in my 13th week of growing my hair, and I got one maintenance cut (last week). The barber was a woman who understood what I wanted. She took off 1/2 an inch, and it looks nicer. I think I might get it once every 3 months.
I grew it out before, but never got past the awkward stage and cut it off.

If you have 1/2 inch cut off every three months, you will be losing 1/3 of your growth. It's your choice, of course.

while saying trims are keeping me out of the awkward stage quite a bit, I forgot to mention I have straight hair. I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make. (probably a lot?) It really is preference on trims.

Absolutely NOT!!!! Remember , hair grows from the scalp not at the ends. DO NOT CUT IT DO NOT TOUCH IT---DO NOTHING BUT LET IT GROW!!!

Some people seem to be totally against trims on this board which I find weird because getting hair trimmed every now and then can really help take you out of the awkward stage in my opinion. Of course on the negative side it will take a lot longer for your hair to grow out, but I personally like having a trim every now and then for a cleaner look. You just have to make sure your stylist knows exactly what you want so she doesn't take too much off.

I just got my hair trimmed about 4 weeks ago (this is the third time I am growing my hair back out - I had long hair before, got it cut, grew it back out again, then realized I couldn't find a job!). It only seems to help your hair look a little better for a couple weeks, then it starts looking like your'e from the 70's or 80's (right now I am looking a little like a younger version of James Michael Vincent - the guy from the tv show Airwolf - hehe). So you are only making a temporary solution to the inevitable awkward stage; however, i guess it's good to get the dead ends out.

The back can sometimes looks like a mullet if you grow out from a shaved head because the back seems longer than the top when really its not. I first got the back of my hair trimmed every few months to let my sides catch up evenly with the back. Now I am working on catching up the top with the rest of my hair. Sure, not trimming it will get it longer quicker but it will also appear uneven throughout the awkward stage.

Trimming does delay the final grow-out. That said, I have to also say that I don't believe in a hard-and-fast no-trims-at-all rule. If having a tiny shape-up trim once in a great while, done by a stylist who can be trusted and knows the final goal, will keep the hair looking somewhat styled and keep someone from getting discouraged and having it all chopped off, then it is all good. It can also keep the ends from looking thin and ratty. That is exactly how women grow their hair out and keep it looking nice; they keep an interim "style" during the growout period. Everyone has to choose for themselves which is more important - maximum hair in minimum time, or maximum style during growout. So far I am going for maximum hair, but I do not rule out the possibility of a trim in the future if I don't like what I see in the mirror.
