Not everyone has to go through the awkward stage. If you trim your hair reguarly then it should be no problem to look good all the time :)

If you want to take an eternity to get long hair, go for it. If you want to waste a lot of hair and money, go for it. Growing long hair is not achieved by cutting it.

Santiago, true in one regard, but not in another. First of all, you are correct, it does take a lot longer and a lot more money with trims to keep your hair looking neat. But considering it can make your hair look decent compared to sloppy for close to a year and a half or 2 years is worth it in my opinion. First of all don't assume everyone reading this board wants to get long hair as quickly as possible, because I am not one of them. Don't get me wrong, I want long hair, but not if I look bad while doing it. I get trims every 3 to 5 months, but I must admit, even though it's slower, I feel a lot better about myself with trims and my growth is still good enough to achieve the long haired look. Remember that not everybody's situation is like yours when growing long hair. By the way, sorry for english errors at this point, I'm quite drunk.

I started growing from a short hair cut last July, got a small trim in October, grew till February, and got another small trim. The trims didn't take a ton off, but I think it looked better before the trims. They seem to put me back into a worse part of the awkward stage. I think I've had my last trim. I am also not satisfied with the speed of growth over the last seven months, but who ever is? I'm gonna try biotin to see if it helps. Some say it doubles the growth rate.

Above ^^^ is the first bit of bad advice I've read on the board.

Crinius, the cardinal sin is to tell people that if you trim your hair all the time then the awkward stage will be avoided, because we are all impatient and want long hair ASAP!

No, not really. The only thing that trimming will do during the awkward stage is to prolong the awkward stage and make it worse.
Trimming is how you make short hair neater. It is NOT how you make long hair neater.

It MAY be true for those who have very straight hair. My wife, for instance, has in the past switched from short to long by growing it out in a "bob" style.
This would not work for me though, as I have very curly hair....I recall back in the 70s I tried, like many other guys back then, to get long hair by just having trims. The result was the perpetually "awkward hairdo" that was synonymous with the decade and now looks so embarrassing on old photos!.
It really comes down to hair type, but for most [including myself], the route to long hair will only be via endurance of the "Awkward Stage".
At the end of the day, it's a personal choice, but my in my opinion longhair and scissors don't go together well.

Oh man, the worst stage in my personal hair growth is when it is just in the middle of being short, and being long..
too short to tie, and long enough to be a pain in the arse trying to keep it out of your face.. I dont like tucking my hair behind my ears.
or when your hair is only eye ball length.. by hair is very straight, and it just pokes you in the eye when you bob your head the wrong way.. like head banging.. people with short hair always ask me to head bang.. feh..
