I know we’ve got the USA and the UK here, but I think it would be really interesting to hear of long hair problems facing guys in other countries as well....the workplace, school and so on.
Anyone from other European countries ? Canada, Australia, South America, Japan and so on....?

Any discrimination problems for example in German schools, the workplace ? Your mother and father's attitudes etc. ?
I've heard that it’s a very easy going country for guys with long hair so is it easy to get any type of job or just some ?
Do you have any help organisation(s) you can go to with men's long hair discrimination problems like in the USA - the "American Civil Liberties Union" ? My own guess the easiest European country for guys to have long hair (with the least official hassles) will be Holland
:-)

No there are no problems. When I told my friends that I´m going to grow my hair out they said "Cool". My partens think I should do what I want, but I think my mother doesn´t like it. However, it´s no problem here. Many high-position Manager here have long hair so in jobs it´s also no problem.

No problems during school either ? Boys can have any length they want or is there a limit ? There always is somewhere....:-)
Either way from the sound of it Austria sounds a real cool place to work, live and enjoy hair as long as you want !
Thanks :-)

Is it easier to get an ordinary job with short hair ?

Hi.
Well, AFAIK in the religious aspect, there is nothing bad with long hair and I know religious people with long hair.
About non-religous discrimination:
Since people here came from all over the world, we are used to having physical diffrences between us and since our attitude is very different from the European strict way of thinking (and it also true to some parts of the USA as I read here) we don't pay too much attention to those things in school so I would say that we don't have such discrimination in schools and it's actually very customary for the "cool" people in the class to grow long hair although we have to cut it when we reach the army-we all have to serve in the army for 3 years from 18 to 21(the girls less but they don't have to cut their hair) but afterwards u r free to re-grow it.
About workplace: I Haven't worked in a "real" job so I can't know but in the high-tech industry it's common to find long haired people and that's how the papers usually describe the high-tech people.
In more conservative workplaces-I don't know but it isn't very common but I'm not sure if it has to do with discrimination or just the fact long hair isn't very popular here for people in their 30+.
About my parents:I'm 22 so I'm not really asking their approval but they like it and they even told me to grow it.(it wasn't why I did it though)
Getting a job: I don't know-all the people I know are short haired and as I said I don't have a job yet(I'm a student and BTW there are many long hair people in my university).
About help organisation and the lack of a real public opinion about long hair:
You have to understand that from the day the Israeli state founded we are in different states of wars-sometimes the situation is better and sometimes worse(as it is now).
Because of that, although Israel is a very modern country, we have more important matters in mind and didn't get yet to enjoy the luxury of having debates about those matters or for that fact having organisation that deal with it.
So in conclusion I have to say that I think we are pretty pro long hair country -I'm in the middle of growing-7 months-but got supportive comments from most of the people and never got harrased by people I don't know(maybe just because I look like some1 with whom u shouldn't harrase :) ).

it's actually very customary for the "cool" people in the class to grow long hair
Do they actually say how long it can be ? Or how old you must be first ? It's also interesting to think that there might just be some school somewhere in the world where boys can publicly grow their hair to any length they want ! (i.e. not hidden say for religious reasons).
I once read some old letters sent back home from a girl who was at a girl's 'long hair college' in the USA, sometime during the middle-late 1800's where from memory it was "required" or "customary" ( I can't remember the exact words) for their hair never to be cut. None of them had hair shorter than their waist whilst several girls had floor length hair or more. It also seemed to be everyone's goal as well ! Unfortunately I never did discover if the story was true or not but that's some school system nonetheless lol :-)
I mean just think of the huge flood of applications if such a school and/or University ever did open ! I'd know join any adult education course going no matter how difficult lol :-)

You can see everywhere all kinds of haircuts. There is not discriminations in french schools neither in the workplace. Interesting what you say about no discrimination in French schools regarding hair length !! Would they allow a boy's hair down for example to below the shoulders or is there a limit ?

In Europe things are a bit different then America, especially Poland.
nobody fusses about a guy wearing long hair.
if you keep it neat and clean there is no problem.
if you are dirty guy with even short hair then nobody will like you and not give you good job.
many professional guys have long hair but it's always clean and trimmed so there is no discrimination in that respect.
I think it is more prevalent here in America. I've had many people ask me if I was living in 1960s, but I do not go barefoot and am not hippie. I just prefer wearing it in longer style.
what about you?

I think it's the same here in the UK too, as long as you're smartly dressed etc. do your job and so on there's no problem though some of the older generation (60 +) still unconsciously stare a bit. There do seem to be quite a lot more 40 and 50 year old guys these days than say 10 years or so ago wearing 'tails though.
As for schools, well there's a couple locally but I can't say I've ever seen anything beyond the occasional awkward stage....
All in all it's no big deal fortunately :-)

Hi Sergey and thanks for replying :-)
Just how long is your hair then ? Waist length or longer ?
I know very little about Russia so what about Russian schools generally ? Are they (or were they once) very strict saying all boys must have short hair ? Do your women also give you long haired guys a hard time and always keep telling you to cut it too !! ;-) Also what sort of work do you do - office/ outdoors ?
All I know is if I had to live through your freezing cold winters I'd never ever cut mine anyway !! lol :-)
I also read an interesting story on the Net recently that many women who joined the Russian Air Force just before the Second World War had never cut their hair in their lives and expected to fly missions without doing so ! Unfortunately they had to cut it all off first :-(

Hi :-)
How long is your hair ? You ever had any nonsense from your parents, friends or school that you must cut it ? I also saw on some TV programme that Thailand can be quite a strict moral society. Is that true do you think ?

Hi,
I?m from Puerto Rico, been reading these boards occasionally since about August of last year when my hair was lower jaw length. Never really posted, but the support others gave each other was cool and made me feel better about having my hair somewhat long. I also came here to gain some insight on how to care for long hair since I was clueless and those around me showed little interest in helping me, except for my mother who after telling me for 100?s of time to cut it, later on liked it and encouraged me. Got the same bs from my grandparents and uncles etc?but they finally gave up and gave into the fact that my hair was staying long.
Unfortunately, my hair started for some unknown reason to fall and break in vast number and depressed me, so I shaved my head. I?ve decided to give it another shot, currently it is close to an inch long but I?m patient. I hope I have the same strength to put up with the upcoming idiocy and hopefully it won?t fall and break like it did last time. Now that is it short people and family members seem to be more accepting and I get less weird looks from guys like I?m now worthy of being a man or something, lol.
Can?t say nothing about schools since I had my hair short all my life. But from observations I have not seen anyone in public schools with long hair. In private/religious schools you cannot have long hair if you are a male. In college well you pretty much are free from restrictions so there you can see guys with long hair, though they are mainly musicians or wanna be rockstars and the occasional ?I just want to have long hair?.
Where I worked (local grocery store chain) males could not have long hair, no beard, no sideburns, only a mustache?typical image of mostly all men in the workplace with the exception of the beard/goatee. I?ve only seen guys with long hair working in music/musician stores, manual labor, construction, modeling if you have killer looks and body, dancers, receptionist (rarity), and if you are your own boss. Overall pretty limited. So yes, if you have short hair getting a job is one hundred times easier providing one is qualified.
Don?t know of any organizations for men, they would probably tell you to cut it, since there is a lot of insensitivity towards men.

Thanks Eric it made really interesting reading ! :-)
I guess I'm still hoping that there's a desert island paradise somewhere in this big wide world where every male in the population has below waist length hair !! Annual hair length competitions.... Where you can meet over a beer to examine and discuss all the new shampoo products etc. just shipped in from the mainland lol !!

Hello
I live in Finland as some of you may know, and have a mid-back long, straight and blonde hair. I'm 29 and working as a research engineer.
: I know we’ve got the USA and the UK here, but I think it would be really interesting to hear of long hair problems facing guys in other countries as well....the workplace, school and so on.
Well, I haven't got much "interesting long hair problems" to share. :-) Most problems are related to knotting and practising sports. I haven't noticed any open discrimination towards male long hair. I guess the overall appearance is what counts in addition to qualifications. I must admit that I haven't stepped much out of the academic world since I've become long-haired. Schools probably not have any discriminationg against long hair. I have no information about "classy" business or law schools, though. They probably have some level of peer pressure to help you to fit in.
People have different opinions, of course. Some like, some not, some find long hair funny etc. I haven't faced any coherent reaction anywhere. I wear my hair with confidence, so insulting me because of it would be futile and I'd probably interpret it as jealousy.

Hi Jarkko :-)
Thanks for all your interesting info. It sounds as though Finland is much the same as the rest of Europe, at least so far anyway. It's just no big deal at all....
By the way I've seen all your pics and they're really good ! :-) Keep growing !

Hi!
I am from Norway, and have at last got my long hair back! I cut it for my grandmothers 75th birthday, and promised her to not cut it until her 100th! That means that I have to cut the hair in 2023, then I will be 56 years old.
