My hair is wavy and shoulder length. I wear it in a pony tail and I like it that way. I find straight hair cool. How can I get it straightened? what techniques exists ?

I got mine straightened by walking into a hair salon and asking to have it chemically straightened. They put a bunch of goop in my head, combed it through, and repeated for an hour or so. I wish I had specifics, but I don't. It all costed about 50 dollars Canadian (probably like 25 American).
I too had wavy hair that was impossible to control no matter what I did (and if it got wet or there was wind I was simply screwed). Right now, my hair is rather straight (not super straight, but enough so that I can style it easily without any problems, and I no longer have to worry about it randomly curling).
All in all, I'm rather pleased. Anyone got any other questions?

I've had a relaxer put in my hair before. It's not really a nice thing to do to your hair.
The bottom half inch or so will burn off altogether. You probably won't be able to tell right away since your hair is now straight and has a new look. The relaxer will feel nice for a few days. Your hair will likely feel very soft. This doesn't last though. Also, it isn't permanent. Your hair will begin to get slightly wavy and curl up again eventually.
I use a hair iron to straighten my normally wavy hair. No more chemicals for me.
I've heard using a perm solution to straighten hair is better than using a relaxer, but I have no personal experience so I really can't comment.
My suggestion - don't do the relaxer. It's very harsh on hair and you'll have new growth that is healthy and the chemically damaged stuff to deal with.

I had my hair straightened with the perm solution about 3 weeks ago. At first it didn't seem to do any damage, but after 3 weeks my hair is fried. And it is not a whole lot straighter than when I started.
When I got it done, the lady at the salon offered to do it again the next day if it wasn't as straight as I wanted... good thing I never!
Anyone have experience with "Straight Perming" yet? I wonder if it really doesn't dry hair out...

I don't know whether what you guys say will happen to me, but I'll post again in three weeks with an update on the hair.
Besides, I'm not trying to get long hair. A nice medium length will do for me (assuming I can figure out a way to keep it straight).

I hold a blow dryer right up to my head on full blast and use a round brush and it works pretty darn well, but I've been told this will kill my hair. Any suggestions that don't involve using chemicals?
