My hair is a poofy mess, what the hell

Ive been growing it for about 8 months now. When its wet it looks great but once it dries it puffs out all over the place it looks gay as hell. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and how long does the hair have to get before it starts to look more straight and not poof out from the head?

I think it's only in exceptional circumstances that people _don't_ go through the 'poofy' stage! Give it another 3-6 months and it should start to weigh itself down. In the meantime, you could try messing around with various gels/waxes/mousses - if anything, they'll distract you until your hair has grown sufficiently!

This is going to be way off topic, but until my hands are slapped by the site owner, so be it. I am a teacher. Once, years ago, two students were discussing something rather loudly. One said to the other: you are RETARDED! Another voice announced: that's not funny. My little brother is retarded, and he had no choice in the matter. The room got very quiet, and we had a lesson that day about using an entire population (retarded) as a put down or insult to another person. The original speaker was a decent student. She meant no offense to anyone. She was good naturedly teasing with a friend. She certainly was not thinking about her language when she used a group of people to teasingly insult her friend.
I assume the same is at work here. I occassionaly have this same converation with my student when one uses the word GAY to describe something in a negative light. We talk about the same issue: using a word associated with an entire community of human beings to make a negative judgment. It's simply not a good thing to do. You never know who is in the room, or who is reading your post, that you may have just offended.
I assume that you meant that your hair looks BAD after it has been washed and dried and gets all puffy. I assume you meant no harm. You might want to reconsider your use of the word "gay". It is used in this culture to denote a community of people, not bad things. If you choose to use it in the second sense, you risk offending and hurting people. You also risk losing the friends you have who are gay but who have not trusted you with that information yet.

The word "gay" has more meanings than the one for a group of people, and though meanings of words are always changing, this is a really old topic I grew tired of about thirty years ago, so I won't say much. As I joked in another post to this thread, the word "straight" also has another meaning when applied to hair. :-)
What I'll say is as a gay man I don't really care if people call others "gay" or "retarded" off the playground because using a group as an insult is baby talk. If you take such talk off the playground, who it reflects on is YOU. Robert also teaches his kids how to spell words, capitalize them, and punctuate sentences. Smart guys take him seriously, because the tools Robert gives you, give you POWER. You can use playground talk and misspell when you post, but the effect will be that people won't give your words much credence. The guy who started this thread had some real concerns, but just look at how little help he's gotten with them.
As for the various cultural and identity stuff being off topic, I'd tend to disagree. There's a lot more to becoming a longhair than growing hair. For a lot of guys their hair growth comes with a lot of growth under the mane, too. Through our sharing of our preferences in things like music, clothing, and religion, we are building our identity as longhairs. This identity is one of our strongest bulwarks against those on the outside who would urge us to "cut".
Proud to be a longhair,
Bill

Thank you for saying that. I'm tired of ignorant people using "gay" as a synonym for "bad" or "stupid."
I think someone needs a thesaurus.

I would just add that if someone told you that "gay" is the opposite of "straight," they weren't talking about hair.
If you want to hang with the grown-ups, you can't talk like a seventh grader.

Wow, I have to worry about whether my hair is gay or straight now? That's a concern I've heretofore only had about my boyfriends. :-)
I meant straight as in not wavy or curly

Try putting a generous amount of non alcoholic gel in it when it is wet and comb it through. It can work wonders. Dep level 8 got me through the awkward stage.
"poofy"? or do you mean big
