Europe vs US

Heya!
It seems to me that most people reporting "social problems" here are from the US...
You know, I can only tell from what I experienced in my life (I'm 19), and there are ALWAYS exceptions and idiots, but here in Europe - people with long hair are not taken as hippies or drug addicts, but distinguished and paying attention on their looks.
And in the latin area, long hairs seem okay too (look on the latin TV stars acting on the US TV stations).
You know, longhairs in the US have problems due to the popularity of the hippie movement in the 60ties. In countries lacking those movements, long hair is not a prob.
Just look at the history of Europe, and long hair. (Aristocracy)

Yes you are right.
Whilst in Europe people have long hair because it looks good, or because of fashion, it seems to me that long hair in the US is part of and ideology or type of living.
Sure, there are exceptions on booth sides, but I'm talking 'bout the general trend.
However, this is nothing new, since Europe was always the "fashion place" :)

YES...what you say is sooooo true. And older Americans can
be really freaked out by loooong hair.
I feel the eyes on me.
Did I land from Mars? Sure seems like it!

Hmm, yes. It seems to me that this is true.
The Fashion vs. Ideology thing is the main reason, I think.
In Europe, people only wear long hair when they are attractive.
You would seldom see guys with overweight, or big beards wearing long hairs, and feeling comfortable with it.
In the US this doesn't apply, at least it seems to me.

What are you talking about? Having long hair has NOTHING to do with attractiveness. Anybody can have long hair if they want, regardless of the opinion of other people.

sure, but the question remains: WHY?
I don't have problems if people start eating mud, but, may I ask this question: For what reason?
I always thought changing your hairstyle should make you more attractive.
If someone wants to wear a skirt - let him do so. But don't wonder if the people in the streets won't find him attractive.

Listen, most women have long hair and a lot of them are ugly! So what you are saying makes no sense. What are you trying to do anyway? Convincing people to have haircuts?

Remi... thats not what were saying at all. Were simply pointing out the various reasons as to why people are more accepting of longhair in europe, and if you were to ever visit europe you would notice the difference as there are a lot more longhairs and no one ever gives it a second thot.

Well I have friends in the UK and let me say things are changing
but not too fast.
On the streets at least there's not too much tolerance for
guys that dont appear straight.
Have no idea why this is so strong a feeling but it's true!

I guess it really depends on how you wear your hair. If you wear it feminine, or your looks are not what some might call "European Model Style", you easily may be took as a freak.

Well, I think the attitude against long hair on males stems from
religiously-determined values. Although Christian Fundamentalism, and
to a certain extent, Evangelicanism, began in Britain in the late 19th Century, and focused on Bible-determined notions of what was sinful, and what not, it has taken hold intensely in the mostly Southern U.S., the Bible Belt, and it's from that that we get the prescription and proscription in 1st Corinth. 11:14, allegedly against men with long hair. However, how do we explain the non-religious southern girls' liking for guys with long hair?...Hmmmm.. Not much Bible-belt influence there...
