strange reaction

I've had longish hair for several years - sort of a suspended awkward stage. However, now it's grown out long enough so it's just south of the shoulders and it ties up properly in a ponytail.
For a variety of reasons I was VERY nervous about wearing a ponytail in public. I anticipated getting negative comments, snide remarks, disapproving looks, or at best, at least constant ribbing.
However, the strangest thing happened: I got almost no reaction.
Co-workers and friends see it, but don't even comment.
Perhaps styles really are changing, perhaps they're all grateful it's not in the awkward stage anymore, or perhaps for most people are more accepting than I expected....

I started growing my hair long 9 years ago. I work in a very conservative office in a public building. I go to work dressed with a tie brief case etc. This was about 8.5 years ago people kept telling me "I needed a haircut." I would just ignor them. Then one day I got up the nerve to pull it back in a very small ponytail. I would gell the rest of the hair so it would look neat. I got so many different reactions and looks. I got compliments from women stating I was making a statement. However I got all sorts of reactions. I could see people laughing and joking mainly guards and bald headed men who I was older then. When I recieved sarcastic comments from the bald headed males, I would tell them I would sell it to them. That usually shut them up. However, as the months went by they got use to it. It was mainly the guards in the building that just had nothing better to do then to poke fun at something that to them was unconventional. As time went on, I use to tease the bald headed guards and tell them "You need a haircut." They then just laughed and took it in stride.
Today, my hair is 35 inches long cut straight across my back all one length. I wear it mostly in a braid down my back at work. I don't receive any remarks. Its sort of a natural thing. Sometimes I wear it in a ponytail and I get compliments from mostly women at the waves. I have been is supermarkets and been approached by women complimenting me on my hair. That always feels good when that happens.
My work place is still too conservative for me to wear my hair down. I do wear it down at home parted in the middle.
My hair seems to have stopped growing. Its almost to the small of my back. Its in good shape with trims twice per year from sympathetic friends. Never go to a hairdresser. They usually give bad and false information about hair trims.
I hope some of this helps.
Good reply...
