It's great to have something like the Internet that can bring people, who otherwise would never meet or even know of each other, together to share the important things in their lives.
I can't even imagine what we did before. :)

I know! Too bad meeting in person isn't as easy! I've had this idea of maybe eventually setting up a date and place for all of us, including family, to get together so we could all meet; but realistically I know that would probably be impractical! I can see us all somewhere with a bunch of food, drinks, games (horseshoes, etc), guitars and music, a campfire, etc.! Geez, I think I watch too much tv! Who knows, maybe someday!

A "Longhair" convention dosn't sound that impractical to me at all. I mean, the motorcycle riders have Sturgis(check spelling)! What's the difference?! Peace!

A piercing/tattoo/etc. community I'm part of (iam.bmezine) has bbq's, "proms", and various conventions all the time! Same goes for the Rocky Horror Picture Show and basically every other tightly knit internet minority. A longhair convention isn't just possible, it's inevitable and long overdue! :)

Well then, I just might have to head one up! I was thinking the same thing about the motorcycle/tatoo conventions, as well as rainbow gatherings, etc. Why the hell not! In fact, I think I will tentatively plan on next summer. I'll be out of school on break and it will give us all a chance to plan. I'll post something (probably another poll!! Haha!) asking if people can make it. In the meantime, I'll try to figure out a good place to have it. This just might work!

Maybe we'd need a year to plan a national gathering, but we should be able to pull off regional ones in California sooner, because we wouldn't have so far to travel. It appears we have at least a dozen flying the freak flag under the bear flag:
SF Bay & Sacto (7): Fitmus, NorCalScott, Zapper, Dustin, Seraphim, Bill, SFMike.
Central Calif (1): Red Rocker
Southern Calif (4): Rev, RoadTripper, Draco, Madoc
I added three in that I knew about who didn't chime in with the poll,
and maybe I missed some other regulars I oughtn't have; my apologies if so. ;-)
Fitmus, you want to do something here in NorCal sooner? After Labor Day on a weekend maybe? That would be plenty of time to plan a mid-day Saturday rendezvous f'rinstance.
Drop me a note if so. Also any other NorCal guys interested in coming let us know! We could pick a spot based on who is coming, so mention what town you're in when you say. Post here, or feel free to drop me an e-mail if you want to communicate your town and e-mail to us without posting it on the board.
Bill. In SF (the city itself)

Hi Bill, that just might be an idea. I'll tell you what, I just posted a general message to the entire board to see what people's thoughts are. We can see what response we get to that, and also see how the Californians feel. I actually start back to law school on August 15th, so I don't know if I'd be able to make it during the school year. However, you guys could definitely do that and then maybe I'll still host the one I was planning on for the following summer. Check out my Convention Idea post and we'll see what response we get to that and to your post also. If for some reason bunch of people were interested in doing a convention sooner then next summer and traveling might is hard for people, the "division" idea I suggested might be good since there are a few of us in TX and WA as well. Those people, for example, may also be able to come into CA for a West Coast divisional gathering.

If we have a national event, we'd best have some local ones first, so we'll have many hands to do the planning and work to pull off the big one. So having both kinds makes sense, and having the local ones sooner makes sense. I'll post this same response to the higher-up thread so everyone sees it. My thought for a local one would just be "for an afternoon". Let one of us know with a post or an e-mail if you're interested in the NorCal one, and those who are can decide where we'll meet and when. We could meet in a a coffee house, or in a park somewhere. Somewhere with significance for longhairs perhaps, like Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park? (big grin through hair)

Hi Bill, I'm going to McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. So how is it being an attorney with long hair? Do you get any bad vibes from co-workers and judges? Any other long haired attorneys in S.F.?
As far as the convention, after hearing some of the others' responses, I think it seems more practical to go by divisions. Maybe we could do a national one in the future sometime.
I'd actually like to host one next summer for the West Coast Division somewhere in the valley since it seems more central to all of us in CA, including those in TX and WA. Since it's sunny here every day during the summer months and the nights always cool off to a comfortable upper 50's to lower 60's with never any rain, it would be nice to do it outside somewhere. This way we'd be able to grill, play outside games, sit around a fire at night in the comfortable temperature, and I'd also like to maybe bring my P.A. system so I can make a speech and maybe introduce us.
But I understand if people are anxious and want one a bit sooner, I just might have to wait till next summer to show up and someone else could host another one. Actually, my hair will be longer then too! Haha! :)

I bailed from the practice of law so long ago I'd not be the right one to ask about current conditions. Drop me a line and I'll elaborate on the law situation as it pertained to me.

Yeah, I think we need to start small. I've seen a few previous attempts at this sort of thing, and they just don't happen unless you have a core group that has gotten to know one another first. We really can't do that well enough on a web board. Like "a picture" in the proverb, an in-person meeting is worth a thousand words. In person it quickly becomes apparent which members of a group have the drive and the interpersonal chemistry to pull off something bigger. Meanwhile, all you'll get in a forum like this is, "Yeah, I think that is cool," but no one will commit to anything.
That's why I suggested we start with a really-tiny commitment first - like "just show up at Starbuck's". :-) If you can't get people to do that within a two-hour's drive of their house, you're sure not going to get them to commit to a weekend in a distant state. But no one will even go to a coffee house unless they feel others will be coming. That's where you need an RSVP mechanism of some kind. We have a local group here and we've tried web boards and e-mail lists, but none of them worked as well as just having a web page devoted to listing RSVPs. It's in black and white there; you're either coming or you're not. When we began that, our attendance doubled. To start with, though, for our group we can just take RSVPs here or by e-mail.

That would be an awesome place for a weekend-long event. Somewhere around 4000 feet in the foothills would be cooler mid-day than on the valley floor, and there are a lot of campgrounds up there with group sites. Some of these campgrounds are near lakes, great places to swim for those of us who don't like salt or chlorine in our manes.
Let's see how many NorCal guys in the next week actually post or write one of us to say "I'd probably come!" and if we get the interest, we can gather for a few hours. Since it's the dry season, a picnic in a park perhaps? Starbucks will still be there for us when it is raining.

Massachusetts + Rhode Island = 5 people
California = 5 people
Since California has a much larger population than MA+RI put together, does this have any proportional significance?
I notice MANY guys round here (RI) with long hair. It's so
commonplace that most people don't even pay much attention to it!

Yes, I agree. Just last night at my local Borders bookstore, I noticed that two of the employees had long hair (one was loose and fell to approximately midback and the second, a manager, had below the belt length hair that was tied). There was also a customer who had hair that fell loose to about midback as well.
