twisty, crooked ends

I have a question. I've been growing my hair for about 18 months from shaved, it is now past my shoulders and I can almost tie all of it back into a ponytail, even the bangs (I give it 4-6 months). Anyway my question deals with the ends. I have a few split ends, I can see them if I look at my hair, but none of them are very huge and they don't seem rampant or anything. I know my hair doesn't look that bad because I sometimes hear from girls "Geez, your hair looks better than mine!" However on some of my hairs the ends get really twisty/crooked for the last little part, sometimes up to an inch or more. What causes this? Is that from previous split ends? My mom, who is completely cool with me having long hair which is kind of cool, said my hair seemed a lot like hers and she just grows her hair through split ends and it looks fine (her hair is lower back, almost hip length). So anyway I was just curious, what causes those weird twisted ends? Overall my hair looks like it kind of curves up a little at the very ends (I have very straight hair). It doesn't look bad but I was just curious if maybe this is a problem I should deal with or like my mom says "just grow through it."
On a side note, I was one of those kids who always had shaggy hair when I was little and was always teased about needing to get a haircut. Then in high school I wore a buzzcut for most of the 4 years. My junior year I met some people who had long hair and I was sort of inspired to try to grow my hair out. Well now I love it and want to keep growing! This isn't really relevant to my question; just me ranting about how FRICKIN cool long hair is.
Later,
Chris

Take your mothers advise, dude (cool mom, by the way). My hair does the exact same thing with curly twisted ends. In fact, I was thinking of posting about this, but you beat me to it. LOL! I don't think it's a big deal with how your hair is going to grow. I think it's a small percentage of my hair that's like that. Now if it gets to where it is rampid all over my head I might start to worry, but not now. Just keep growing, dude, and enjoy the journey! Peace!!!!!

I think the twisted crooked ends may possibly be due to pulling or streyching the hair, as in when getting tangles out. On my hair, at least, the tiny tangles get the worst when they're right at the ends of my hair, and they're a real b*tch to get out without pulling the hair a bit.

If you tie it back or something , that can contribute to the problem when its untied.
Also, A lot of peoples hair does this, its just that a lot of girls correct it in the morning by tucking the ends under with a curling iron, or using some products, etc. My mom appears to have very straight hair, even at mid back, but its actually pretty wavy if you see it wet, and she fixes it in a few minutes in the morning.
The longer your hair is, the straighter its gotta be to lay perfectly straight.
