Braids = Faster Hair Growth?

I was talking to someone with short, small braids in his hair, over the entire head. He told me it makes his hair grow much faster when they're in - does anyone else have experience in this or know whether or not it's true? Perhaps the brain senses that the head is suddenly getting colder (from the spaces between the braids) and there fore prompts hair growth. Any ideas?

I noticed that when I had braids for 3 weeks in the summer my hair grew a little faster, but not that much. Maybe it's that it pulls on the scalp?
