Hey Guys:
Is it normal when you remove the elastic from your hair to have anywhere from 5-8 hairs attached/wrapped around it?

Happens to me all the time.
I think it's just all those hairs that naturally come loose
over the day. They're held in by the band until you take it out.
I've noticed I've often got several hairs wrapped around the pony
band, especially if I've used it a few times.
Just make sure you're not using the ones with metal clasps,
or (heaven forbid) plain rubber bands ^_^ .

As others have said, you need to choose a tie which doesn't damage your hair. A scrunchie is probably the best, but any fairly thick covered band is OK if you are careful.
Make sure you don't put the tie on too tightly, and also ease the hair our of the tie carefully when you take it off - don't just pull the tie off the hair. If you are getting hairs wrapped round the tie, you're not being careful enough, although the occasional loose hair coming away with the tie is normal.
only tie dry hair

I always tie my hair when its strongest...when it is dry and with a cloth covered black scunchie. Then I loosen the band a bit. Then I wet my hair and slick it back-looks the same as if I tied it wet, but with less damage.
