Screening Notice
Posted by The Rev on October 16, 2002 at 15:32:28: Previous Next
Every few messages I post, I get that screening notice. Usually my post shows up after a few hours, and I haven't had one not show up, but I'm wondering why I keep getting this message. Are there certain words that set it off, or is it just "every 20th post" or something? I would hate to think it was something personally attached to me (like I angered someone once and now I'm being monitored; am I paranoid or what?)
Just curious,
The Rev

He will probably not want to discuss the details on how it works, because that might impair what it is there for. Those of us who were here in 1999 when he put it on line know why it is there - this board had become overrun with harassers to the point it was no longer a pleasant place to visit, and worse, to the point that its important mission was being compromised.
A board for longhaired men attracts a lot of trolls. The reason is probably rooted in the situation that you can't readily change back and forth between having long hair and not, so people get issues of frustration about long hair concerning themselves and concerning others. I'm sure Victor would dearly love to just turn the screener off, but he knows better than to.

I get it periodically myself, but I always figured Victor was screening through the messages to take out the undesirable or what-not. But yes, I get that now and then. Later on my message always appears.
PEACE!!!!!

Since you asked, let me explain.
First, let me say that I intend for this forum to be as open as possible. With that in mind, it also needs to be a civil environment. As the rules state, this board is targeted at general audiences.
It would be great if we could simply trust everyone to behave appropriately, and indeed, that is what happened the first couple years this board was here. However, as anyone who has been here a long time and checks the board regularly knows, occasionally, there are troublemakers.
They take many forms. I won't go into it here in detail. Suffice it to say that there are various measure, both automated and manual, that are in place to ensure the civility of the discussions.
As you surmised, there are certain words that set it off. However, the word list is in flux and is changed to fit the current profile of troublemakers. If all works well, you will notice only a minor setback, line messages being held occasionally.
If it makes you feel any better, my own posts get held every now and then.
I also have a couple of assistants who graciously help me to clear out the held messages. If for some reason a message is held for an extended time, or it is not cleared, and you think it should have been, I am always available by email (except when I'm on vacation).
I won't go into more detail about the screening measures as that would compromise them. I hope you understand.

Rev,
Don't sweat it. Any delay you experience is just that caused by the FBI's Carnivore program running its routine downloads of all email and Web posting on the Net. Nothing to worry about at all. Just routine. Pay no attention to it. You have nothing to fear from it. Nothing at all. Move along now. These aren't the droids you're looking for...
