cutting sides?

Hey guys. So I know the general consensus is no trims in the awkward stage, but I wonder about trimming only the sides. My hair is wavy/curly and sticks out to the sides a lot, leaving me feeling somewhat clownish. Can cutting the sides shape the hair so it grows out better, or is the allure deceptive? Thanks...

Is it an undercut you are thinking about?

David, I'd say definitely NO, but I'm not always in tune with what everyone else says here. I think the alure is deceptive, it will grow out just as curly/wavy on the sides. You have to decide for yourself, but let me explain my situation.
I decided I was going to let my hair grow, with the encouragement of my wife (great way to shut up others, they can argue with her LOL). Went to the gal who cut our hair, told her what I wanted to do. Started about Mar. 2000. She gave me a couple of minimal trims so my side hairs would catch up to my longer top and back hairs.
I was in an awkward stage for a bit, but it doesn't last forever. My hair is fairly straight, but as it gets longer starts to wave. Looked goofy sometimes, but when I couldn't stand it a little hair control product was enough to get by for a day or 2 until I didn't mind or have an important meeting.
I would suggest not cutting your side hairs as it will just take longer till you can pull them back into a tail, if you want to do that. Can't remember how long it took to get it to a decent length for a tail, but I like wearing it that way and work outside often, works out much better.
I still go back about 6-12 weeks just to get my sideburns trimmed and the short hairs on my neck that never grow long, go with the wife and takes all of 5 minutes for me. Plus my hair gal is very long-hair friendly and an absolute gas, crazy!
Do what makes you happy!!!

Thanks all for the advice-- I'll take it. And I'm really grateful a place like this exists where I can vent hair worries and not be embarrassed, and actually get good advice. Much appreciated.
