Tips for starting out

I have been growing my hair from a short cut since early July, anyone have any tips? I have thick, wavy, and dark hair that can get VERY fuzzy. If I purposely mess up my hair, it doesn't fall back down :( It seems a lot more controllable when it's sweaty, is there anything I can use to help with this until it gets longer? Right now I'm just using J&J shampoo and some conditioner.
And I'm going for the Brandon Boyd look, how much longer will it take to grow out? Right now I can pull my bangs down to just below my eyes, although they are usually above my eyebrows because of the waves.

Theres been a lot of band talk lately and I was reminded of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. As you can see, wavy hair can look awesome, his is on the brink of being curly, so you can bet his hair was very big in the beggining.
Great motivation...

Well my hair is thick and wavy (curly on the back) and i have been growing scince around april. I comb it side to side and have it behind my ears at the moment as i feel its the only way my hair looks ok. I find wearing a wooly hat for like 15 mins usually helps, but i dont think i could manage with it combed forwards. maybee if you just put some water on there it would help too. i always flatten it through the day with my hands too, that may help.
Good Luck

It depends on which Brandon boyd look you're going for..it seems his hair is different in every video I've seen. Also sometimes its extremely curly and then other times its almost straight like on the diary of incubus show. Does anyone happen to know what is hair looks like currently? The latest video by incubus I've seen was Warning but I dont know if he's growing it out or if it's been trimmed.

I'm thinking of the picture on the cover of Spin magazine about a year ago, I think it was a little bit longer than in the pic in your post.
