question for any hair 'guru'....

Well I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but I couldn't find anything on such a topic. I have been growing my hair out for five months now and it is getting longer. However, the last time I got it cut I got it cut in such a way that I told them to cut the sides and back shorter than the top...should this affect my hair growing out plans or does it not matter? In other words, when you grow your hair out is it better to start with all even sized hairs? And also, I have really really thick hair and it's very wavy...I don't see it hanging down after I grow it out, I can only see it growing bigger vertically on my head...can I get it straightened at a salon or something, and how much does that stuff cost? Would it even work for really thick hair? I'm gonna decide within the next few days whether to keep growing the hair or getting it cut, any input would be helpful...thanks friends :)

im going to guess by your hair growing vertically that its curly/wavey. if not then my mistake.
i also have the back and sides shorter in what i thought was a good attempt and getting it all even in the long run. ie - the front would be down to my chin by the time the back and sides were down to my neck.
of course what happens is by the time you actually get long ontop you have to wait for the back and sides to grow out - longer waiting period.
i would rather have started with all the even length hair then getting the back and sides cut. and while i so desperatly want to get the back and sides cut again [ it makes it look alot neater imo ] i know i will just regret it as my hair gets even more longer.
at the moment its down to my nose and im going to happily leave the back and sides around that length too.

Hi, i have wavy hair too, its not all even and i think this helps keep it down a bit through some of the awkward stage in my case. Ive decided in another year im going to try even it all out a bit, when the top hair is rite down to the bottom of my face. If your hair is anything like mine it will grow down, it just needs time to get longer. I suggest you try flattening it with spray or gel if you really dont like it atm.

My suggestion is to let your hair grow out evenly until it is all shoulder length, then decide what to do with it from there. If you keep trimming the sides before it passes the "awkward stage" then you won't find out what you look like with long hair framing your face.
(Check my pix to decide what my advice might be worth...)
Happy growing

I tried to have my hair straightened with a product called Rusk Anti-Curl. The product is supposed to stay in your hair for only two to four months (it's not permanent). Like you, I have wavy and very thick hair. I was told it would loosen the waves and curls a lot but they wouldn't be totally gone. The Anti-Curl barely relaxed my waves. There was no noticeable difference in my opinion, and it actually made my hair look thicker than before. I think there may be other straighteners or relaxers out there, but the Rusk Anti-Curl didn't work for me.
don't cut it for a while

I'd say don't cut for a while-probably 1 1/2 more years (till it gets to your shoulders). My hair is wavy/curly too. You'd probably like straight cuz it looks long faster. Thing is, by straightening your hair your damaging your head cuz that isn't what God gave u. Go natural-it may not look it's best to u for a while, but it'll last longer than if you had damaged it. Check out my hair progress pics here:
Hope this helps!

It really doesnt matter much. Different hair styles will result in slightly different looks but I wouldnt recomend any particular way to start. just let it grow and realize that it will be awkward looking for a period of anywhere from 1-2 years. invest in some hair jell and some "no dammage" pony tail elastics and you should be fine. My only other comment is that some times when you part your hair on the side and get it cut that way the barber/stylist will cut one side slightly shorter than the other for ballance. if this is the case you may want to part your hair down the middle and go to have it trimmed even. dont let them talk you into anything else. most barbers are scissor happy.
