Beard Care?
Posted by jk on February 06, 2003 at 04:45:21: Previous Next
Hi, I'm almost 2 weeks into growing a beard. It looks decent but I'm not totally satisfied with the way it looks. It grows in pretty full but doesn't look neat, the hairs are all going in different directions. Is there anyway to make a beard look better and does anyone have any tips? Is it even possible or do you have to go with the flow and let it grow in the way it wants?
Thanks

The answer depends upon your beard type. In general, beard hairs are much coarser than scalp hairs, but this is not always the case (I know someone with downy soft whiskers, and he lets them grow out). However, they can be straight or curly. If they're curly, there's not really anything you can do about it because of the coarseness, unless you let it acquire some length.
My own beard has a mix if very fine to extremely coarse whiskers. Some are arrow straight and others are extremely curly. Color ranges from white, to red, to blonde, to brown.
I decided in 1995 not to cut it anymore, and now it's long enough to sometimes get caught in a pocket when I reach for change.
If you're going to leave your beard relatively short, and you have curly whiskers, don't give in to the urge to trim stray whiskers. As the errant hair continues to grow, it will curl back into the group. Besides, I've found that people are generally more picky about their own beards than other people are. You see all these errant hairs with others don't notice.

Victor,
Sorry to kinda get off of the thread topic, but I figured this would be the best place to ask:
I've always though you had a great looking beard, and was wondering what kind of routine (if any) you practice to keep it clean and looking good. My beard's about 4", very curly and coarse, and I get a LOT of split ends and broken hairs, which I believe to be slowing down my growth.

Well, first, thanks for the compliment! I actually spend less time on my beard than on my hair. I think this is a natural consequence of there being fewer hairs mostly. There is simply less to take care of.
I wash it and condition it when I do the same for my hair. In fact, for conditioner, what I do is apply conditioner first to my hair. Then, with the leftovers on my hands, I apply to my beard. Then, I take my hair and beard and wrap them around each other to sort of even out the conditioner.
I don't brush my beard but comb it with a wide-tooth comb. The strong curl of the beard would result in damage if I brushed it. OK, sometimes I brush it with a wide-tooth brush, but not often.
I, too, get lots of splits and breaks in my beard. However, these only seem to occur in certain kinds of beard hairs. Some get so split and broken that I simply pull them out. Hey, when they're splitting a mm out of the follicle, what's the point in letting it grow? I'm constantly amazed at the variety of hairs in my beard. There are enough that don't seem to have any break or split problems that I don't worry about pulling the others out occasionally.

Hmm, that sounds basically about the same as what I do, with the shampooing and conditioning. (Except I usually forget to do it but once a week or so, doesn't seem to get too greasy, though).
On beards.org, there was a picture of you in black (or grey, maybe) with your hair down, and your beard reaching most of the way down your torso. If you can remember, about how long did it take to get to that length (that's kinda my goal for right now).
Also, when you say that you shave, do you mean your whole face, or just kinda trimming up (cause I didn't think you'd lost the beard!).
Thanks for the help,
Evan

Maybe this was the picture you were referring to? My beard grows about 1 cm per month. It's been pretty much staying the same length for a while now, though. If I said I shave, I didn't mean to. That should be PAST tense. Take a look at this gallery, and you can see me in a variety of hair styles, short, long and beardless, mullet, etc.

Yep, that'd be the picture!
Good inspiration, for the hair and beard.

Beard during the summer question?

How do you put up with the beard during the hot summmer days? I live in Arizona and as much as I would like growing a beard, the extreme summer days scare the heck out of me.

To be honest, I don't notice the heat at all due to having a beard. What I do notice is the cold when I shave (it's been a while). And that is more of a temporary type feeling like you get when you apply alcohol to your skin. After a few days, it feels just like it did before.
