i know that every message i post on here seem to be about baldness, but it is an issue that rather concerns me at the mo
my dad has thcick wavy hair but he's lost quite alot, i asked earlier if i was destined to be a gonner but someone said that the first son gets his hair from the maternal grandparent. My grandad had thining straght hair. he still had quite a bit more then my dad though.
My hair is thick and wavy (nothing like my grandads), seens as ive inhereted my dads thick wavy hair will i also inherit his baldness????
Sorry to ask such a long winded question.
appreciate any feedback.
cheers
Dave

I have thick, wavy Hair of the Type my Mother had, an i am the first -and only- Son.
My Father startet to go bald at the Age of abt. 20,and my Parents always told me i would end up like him - especially if i would grow my Hair out, he he.
I am 43 now and can hardly notice any loss of Hair, thanks God!
This would support your Theory...

My paternal grandfather had blonde hair, he's now completely bald.
I have thick, darkbrown hair, much like my dad's and mom's... I hope I don't go bald.

Well if the maternal grandparent theory is true that would really suck for me! My maternal grandfather is the ONLY person in my entire family who has gone bald (nobody has even experienced thinning!)

I believe baldness follows any other genetic trait. Your genes don't know if you are the first grandson of a bald man (or whatever the current theory). Baldness is rampant in my mother's side of the family. My grandfather, uncles, and several male cousins were all prematurely (late 20s) bald. I have a full, thick head of hair at age forty with no signs of thinning. I can thank my father's side of the family for that genetic gift. OTOH, shortness runs on both sides of the family and boy did I get whammied there!

There is a widespread notion that the gene for baldness is carried on the X chromosome. This would explain why baldness is more common in men than in women. It also would explain why relatives on the mother's side of a bald man would tend to have a higher frequency of baldness. It would be completely unrelated to the bald man's mother's father being bald, since he does not pass an X chromosome down to his daughter.
In truth, there is no evidence that baldness is a sex-related trait, carried on the X chromosome. Rather, genes elsewhere that control sensitivity to hormones generated by males, tend to be correlated with baldness (hence the plethora of commercials talking about dihydrotestosterone supressing hair stimulating ointments). This explains the tendency of men to be bald more than women, because men tend to have more male-related hormones in their bodies than women do. Go figure. This explanation would also fit with a bald person's maternal grandfather also being bald (or the paternal grandfather, for that matter).

Would it be true that the more body hair you have the less you'll have on your head (and vice versa). Testosterone related, I suppose. I observed that most extremely hairy men are usually balding.
I'm 21 and I have practically no body hair at all, my chest and back are naturally bare and I have a minor amount of arm and leg hair.

There might be a correlation, but I really don't know. This question comes up fairly regularly on beard-related forums. I don't think there is a consensus. You can find counterexamples either way.

me and my siblings are the unlucky ones in our family in this matter.
my dad was the only one out of his brothers to go bald. And i have the same texture of hair he had. so if baldness is passed along with the hair type im buggered.
Late 20's isnt premeture. My dad started when he was 17, im 17 now argh, but no sign of baldness yet, i think, even though my forehead is the size of a runway.
Also i thought that it was not the amount of hormones produced to affect baldness, but the hair roots succeptability to the hormones.
