Help! Split ends??
Posted by Brion on March 26, 2003 at 19:11:09: Previous Next
OKay heres the deal. My sister just told me that we should go get the ends of my hair trimmed because they're split. She actually wants to see my hair grow longer, but I immediately dismissed here. But now all I can think about is how she said my ends are dead and won't grow. Is this true?! I am REALLY against trims but I didn't know my hair would stop growing entirely. Any advice or comments would be MUCH appreciated.

Your hair doesn't grow from the ends, its grows from the base (your scalp). Trimming off split ends might make your hair look nicer, but it will not make it grow any faster at all. All your hair is "dead" anyway, otherwise cutting it would be very painful!

get rid of your split ends immediately. Your hair will continue to unravel if you don't. Whats worse...losing less then half an inch (about a months growth) or having fugly long hair that is chock full of splits. Split ends don't fix themselves, you gotta cut em off like a cancer. Hope you consider this. Yes, your hair WILL continue to grow, but you won't like the moster it will become.

There are two things that need to be done, but they should not be done
in the same operation if you want to have the best looking hair, without losing much of the length:
1) removing split ends
2) trimming the bottom to look even
First, find the split ends and remove them one at a time, cutting just above the split, until you have removed them all. Then trim to make the bottom smooth. This should maximize your length since, for example, you may need to remove two inches off a few hairs to get rid of the split ends, but only one-inch off of the others to even out the bottom. One such trim every six months should work well.
I used to go for terminal length with no trims, but now prefer the look of a nice straight bottom, even though it is a couple of inches higher than the maximum terminal length. Another way of putting it is I'd rather have people guessing what my terminal length is, rather than announce it with a straggly bottom line :-)

it's hard to believe...

that there are people who believe hair growns from the ENDs!
Even nails don't do that.
No wonder there is so much confusion out there!

Hair grows at the roots dude, not at the ends of your hair. Don't worry about, don't trim it, i haven't trimmed my uneven/split ends.
I don't think its that important, objective is to grow hair. I'm not too concerned with how the hair looks in the process of growing long hair. Think of it as the ugly duckling story :P With a little patience your hair will turn into a beautiful swan, heh heh.

hey Brion
listen to them, i have been growing mine for 2 years now and it is to the middle of my back. i have not once trimmed it in two years, the only reason i would suggest to cut it is to keep it somewhat even. but in the case of split ends use some vitamin shampoo or conditioner, some good ones is tre semme, pantene, even finesse (i know it is supposed to be a chick shampoo but it works trus me )is a good one, i have been using it for some time and my hair looks healthy even the ends.
let us know how it goes.

Is your sister blonde? Since she made that comment about hair growing at the ends don't trust her about the split ends and get a SECOND OPINION before taking any drastic measures.

Your hair is already dead! If it weren't, it would hurt to get it cut.
Hair grows only from the root! It doesn't grow from the end.
Your hair will always grow...no matter what teh ends are like.
A trim wouldn't be bad though. Get rid of the split ends. They can't be repaired or anything. A hair shaft is like a water hose. If your water hose splits, you can reapir it with duct tape, but it isn't really the same. Same goes for hair. You can condition and "hide" the split ends, but you can't fix them.
Not all trims are bad ideas.

Not true. Your cornea is alive, but it doesn't hurt to poke, cut, drill, etc. into it. It's the presence of nerves, not life, that determine pain. Even so, it has to be the right kind of nerves.

Your hair is dead. Period. It does NOT grow from the end, only from the root. That's why it doesn't hurt to cut it, yet hurts to pluck it.
Nuff said.

Sure your hair is dead (actually, part of it, the follicle, is alive), but that's not WHY it doesn't hurt to cut it. In fact, sometimes it doesn't hurt to pluck one either. What hurts is when you sever a nerve or otherwise traumatize it.
And if the hair were alive, it still wouldn't hurt to cut it, because there are no nerves in the length of the hair.

Hi I've been growing my hair for years and have had many many many consultations about my hair with "qualified" hair consultants.
The only way you can ever get rid of split ends is to cut them with very sharp sissors.
Split ends will never go away unless they are cut off! There is no special shampoo conditioner or oil that will "fix" them, the only thing they will do is stick them back together for a very short period of time and once they un-stick again they travel furthur and furthur up to the root of the hair which leaves your hair damaged and feeling similar to a hay-stack.
I repeat you cannot repair them. Split ends are caused by to much heat on the cortex (inside of hair shaft) caused by curling irons hair dryers etc. which causes the tips to split hence the name "split ends". The best way to remove split ends and keep your hair in healthy condition is to cut them. If you dont want to cut your hair because you want to keep it long, dont worry normally only 2-3 inchs will need cutting and it will always grow back!!
LOL...
