Maintenance Cut?

Hey,
Ive been trying to grow my hair long, since January 1st(my last hair cut). Ive finally come to the conclusion that I want to try long hair for once. I'm going nuts though. Should I get a maintenance cut? Its just that I don't want a mullet, and the hair by my ears drives me nuts. Probably once a day I think, "God! The hair is tickling my ears! Just cut it!" But then I come to my senses... Anyway. Should I get a maintenance cut, and what should they do? Should I do a bowl cut type thing or something and have it just get longer eventually? Ive never grown my hair out before, and I kind of feel stupid about it =)
Thanks for any help in advance,
Jesse
Well...

...if you're growing your hair out from a short hair cut, you're inevitably going to hit some type of a mullet unless you keep trimming the back. Having said that, I'd say the decision is up to you.
However, a word of advice: judging that you have never grown your hair out before and you complained a bit about the hair behind your ears, you're in for a harsh experience. Growing your hair out takes much patience...not only with the amount of TIME it takes to do it, but also with the AWKWARD STAGE. What you're going through now is nothing; you barely have your feet wet. You're going to need to make a decision on whether this is something you seriously want to do. Stock up on gel and hats, and get ready for a rough ride (wait a few more mohths). It can be done, it just takes patience (and frequenting this board!). Good luck.

Its not the hair behind the ears, its the short hair in front of the airs that tickles the inside of my ears. Im sure once its long enough that that hair won't be to the length to dangle inside my ears. I need to stick it out though, if I cut it short again, I know I'm going to be pissed off at myself for not going through with it. Its something Ive wanted to do for a long time, but never stepped up to do it until now. Thanks again.

...what you mean. Just wait until it goes in your eyes, and when it goes into your mouth and down your throat from breathing in! :)
Seriously, though, you can do it. Just hang in there and realize that it'll get better. Take care...
If you're willing

You should not cut it now. In 2-6 months you'll be beyond this stage, and won't have to go through it again. Tolerate it now and you won't have to feel it again.
Look at yourself each day and say "this is just a passing thing." "This, as all things will pass."
It's a test of your tolerance.
Resonance should post more pics of himself and his hair to show everyone what you can accomplish (and so I can drool for a while...*wink wink*)

lol, you flatter me! I generally aim for every six months, I want to try and get some decent, sunny, outdoor prints rather than using my hopelessly inadequate digicam next time round.

Fitmus has given you some very valuable insight and advise. Very well put. Now here is what I would like to add. Growing your hair long is something you need to dedicate a large part of yourself to. Growing also is a one directional adventure. If you keep cutting back to neaten up, your taking backward steps. For instance. The hair that is tickling your ears is obviously at a length where it will tickle your ears. Cutting it back will only mean that it will eventually grow back to the same length where it will tickle your ears again. That will be a never ending battle untill you determine yourself to get past that length and advance on to greater stages of hairgrowth and all the ups and downs that come along with it. Perseverance is a virtue, my friend, a lesson I wish I had only learned sooner. Good Luck in whatever you do. Peace!

Since FITMUS and I are esstentially in the same boat as far as growth goes, we both know that the awkward stage is hellacious. I just gritted through it with no trims and am happy to say it's starting to look long at 8 months. It's the ultimate mental challenge and you really have to dedicate yourself in order to end up not cutting. Other than that, keep yourself occupied and study up on hair facts (and snappy comebacks, heh) in the mean time.
Cheers.
