bangs

Hi,
What are people's thoughts about having bangs, rather than letting them grow out too? It takes so long to grow out bangs long enough to tie them back and during the growing time they are a major hassle. At least for me, because I am in training for sport and I cannot wear a hat without it flying off my head due to movement. Pins, etc just don't seem like an option - I work out with a macho group of athletes that would mock me relentlessly for the use of something so practical as that.

A: Are you wanting to grow your hair long? B: If so, are you growing your hair long for yourself, or your sports friends?
Bangs are a large factor in growing your hair long by the normal standards that are upheld by the majority of this longhair online community. In fact, I have known StanleyBey (a poster at this board) to say that growing long hair is all about the bangs. Most guys here have an all over growth outlook on growing hair, including myself. Of course the choice is totally up to you, but long hair with short bangs is too much like a mullet for my taste. Just my opinion though. Good Luck and Peace!

grow your bangs. You'll just end up growing them eventually anyway. 'Take your medicine now' is my motto. Well, my motto is actually "anything hard is not worth doing" but Im making concessions for the sake of the post. in the famous words of Treyn, "peace"!

In my opinion short bangs with the rest of the hair long is a feminine hairstyle though some guys can pull this off for example ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus and James Earl Jones playing the bad guy in Conan the Barbarian. The rest of us need long bangs to look "correct".

So ? Just do it anyway !!
I don't know if David Beckham is as famous in America as he is in the UK but now he's growing out from a buzz cut he's on the cover of magazines wearing hairbands all the time. Given that his hair seems to influence so many people I expect to see this copied mainstream.
I agree with the other posts - just grow them out (if that's what YOU want).

I used to shaved my sideburns until I was about half-way through the awkward stage. Then I realised I'd just have to get it over with one day and let them grow. It's not so bad once they tuck behind your ears.

Just what exactly are Bangs..?? Sorry for being a noob but i've never heard of the word before i came here.!
I get the impression that the bangs are your sideburns or rather the hair that grows over the short underneath sideburns, while shaving i have started actually lifting up my sideburns while just shaving the shorter underside hairs level, and tucking the longer hairs behind my ears emphasis on Trying... lol
Please correct me if i'm wrong :¬)
Cheers
Grale.

You get bangs when you keep the front of your hair (above your forehead/around your face) trimmed so it won't be in your face or to give it some volume or style on the top of your head. This is an easy area to add style as it is the place where your and other's attention tends to be focused.
I think that the key is to keep any bangs no shorter than your eyebrows. Anything shorter runs the risk of looking "mulletish".
Bangs don't necessairly look "girlish" as some bring up, there are different styles of bangs. Most girls who have bangs will cut just the portion that is above their forehead and leave everything else longer; this makes bangs which are very noticeable.
In the 80's, girls would take their bangs and hairspray freeze them sticking straight up as a way to maximize their facial impression (note that they often left the rest of their hair hang flat in back of the "bang lift" which made them look odd and not so attractive from views other than head-on).
I've had bangs for years as I grew my hair out. If you feather them back then they are no so obivous and give you a bit of versitality. Currently I am going through the awkward stage of growing my bangs out but the patience I learned over the years makes it much easier to deal with as I know what to expect. This will leave my hair at a couple of different lengths but I think that I may like that style and if I don't then I can keep growing it longer or trim it back.
I thought a change would be nice so I'm letting it grow. A lot of people need to change things every of often and keep cutting their hair to fill this need but what they don't realize is that if they just keep growing their hair out...it changes that way too!

Bangs are the hair at the front of the head. I can't give an exact definition, since i only know what i've read from people here. I get the impression, that your hair at the front of the head is always your bangs, no matter what their length, and so it's not really a style(like a fringe)... Maybe an American poster can give a better description.
I guess it's a word used only in America... I've certainly never heard it anywhere other than this forum.

Neither have I... and I always assumed it was American slang for sideburns! Well, you learn something new every day. So, Shaun, please disregard my previous post ;)

Hi,
Thanks for your replies so far in this thread. If you guys or gals have something to say, let's see it.
Firstly, I do not share the view that one or two of you expressed that growing out the bangs are the key to long hair. I consider the overall length of hair although I agree that the mullet should be avoided, if only to avoid social stigma attached to it. Remember when the mullet was cool? Around the time that boys in North America also wanted to own Z28s, Trans-Ams or Corvettes which by the way are the automobile antithesis of the mullet (long in the front, short in the back). Really it all balanced out, like the yin and the yang.
The advice to keep growing is what i think is right - at least keep them going so long as there is uncertainly over what look to achieve. I think the dissatisfaction at present is much more to do with the hair at the sides of my head which is just below ear lobe length, or a little longer if I stretch them down. it makes me look like I am wearing ear muffs. Once that part on each side grows out a few more inches I'll be a lot more satisfied.
The link shows a few banged styles which I think are possiblities. Let me know if you like them.

Shaun: This is my take. I say grow 'em out. I know that the pics you posted were all of women and you said to ignore that but I think that trimmed bangs on a guy will look mulletish. This is not good. I've been growing my hair for three years now and I can tie it all back - but, until I was able to tie it back I wore bandanas a lot. I don't know where you live, but I live on a little island in the Pacific Northwest where there's a healthy population of artists and hippies so the bandana (AND the long hair that didn't always look great in between short and long) didn't look out of place at all. It also gives one a bit of a biker look (Aaron Eckhart in "Erin Brockovich"). Anyway, bandanas are pretty good at staying on your head no matter what you're doing. And I think they look really good.
Hope this helps. -Dan

: I don't know, I never used them in my acward stage, but then, I just threatend it with a knife a few times a weak..
But they soak up sweat, and hold your hair out of your face when you are moving around alot. And they don't fly off.
Also, from what I remember, those girls didn't have long hair, by the standards on this forum, and non of those styles would look good in a tie. Also, they are modles, they stand there and let people take pictures of them. Not restle, run, or what ever you are into.

I don NOT like any of the styles you like. Can you spell M-U-L-L-E-T? The 1st one would need huge amounts of gel to keep it in style. You didn't think it would look like that all the time, did you? I don't consider the 2nd one to even be a longish hair style. The 3rd one is the best of a bad bunch (hey, everyone is entitled to an opinion!) but only if you got rid of that growth in the neck.

Okay, thanks for the reply. I will reconsider since you say they look like mullets although since the styles are only short in front I didn't think they qualified as mullets.

My guitar teacher named Rick is a bloody spitting image. He has mid back length hair all around, but very short bangs in the front. It's pretty ugly, but he's a very cool guy. Point is not to cut them. Brush them behind the ears. Gel them. Pin them. But do not cut them.
Cheers.
