Getting a perm

Hi guys,
My hair is fairly short by the standard on this board...the back is a little past my collar and the top is probably 6 or 7 inches long. My question is: Should I get a perm? My hair is extremely straight and thick...it has been tough even getting my hair to this point because it doesn't have much movement. I would like to eventually grow my hair out to my shoulders and I thought it might help to make my hair curly or wavy. my brother has natural wavy hair and when his hair has grown out, it looks absolutely great....any advice?
David

David, begin by drawing a long wavy vertical line. That represents your brother's hair as it grows long--wavy from scalp to tip. Now draw a long straight vertical line with a small spiral-shaped curl at the end. That represents your "permed" hair as it grows long--straight from scalp to permed area (the curl at the end only). If that is the effect you want...
What I am trying to say is: your hair is not ever going to have the same growth pattern as your brother's "absolutely great grown out" natural wavy hair. But, hey, couldn't having thick straight hair look just as "absolutely great grown out"? I think so.

I have wavy hair and it takes a lot of fiddling about with to get it looking o.k and then a hour later its gone looking bad again. I wouldnt get a perm, try and accept your hair and learn to like it is the best thing to do
Definetly not good...

Take Will and BRGallagher's advise against perming, man. Bad idea in my opinion. The majority of un-natural things that people do to their hair, they end up hating it afterwards and wishing they had never done it. Take me for instance. My hair is thick like yours, so I got it in my head that I could eleviate some of that thickness by under-cutting it. BAD MISTAKE!! Looked terrible and totally un-natural. Wish I had just been patient and left it alone to this day and I would be an accomplished longhair by now. Instead I am right back in the awkward stage again starting over. This will probably happen to you if you perm it. By the way, I bet if you grow your hair to your shoulders like you said you want it, you will want to just keep growing it on down from there. I hear it's addicting. I'm going terminal! Good Luck and Peace to ya'!!
YES!!!
