3 months short of one year!

Well, it's been about 9 months since I decided to start growing my hair out, and I'm sure I wouldn't have made it this far without the help of this site. There have been days I've looked in the mirror and seriously condidered chopping it all off, but coming to this forum always makes me calm down and remember why I started growing it in the first place. Hair is so easy to cut, so difficult to grow. I can't cut it now, I just can't. It would cancel out all the work it's taken to come this far, all the bad hair days I've survived, all the dirty looks, it would all have been in vein. I started out with an almost total buzz cut, and now have bangs I can chew on:)(not that I chew them...but I could if I wanted to)
One question, I'm no hair expert so I'm not exactly sure how a "split end" is identified or defined, but I think I might have a few of them. Should I worry? I hear they can crawl up the hair shaft and do alot of damage if they arent taken care of, but if taking care of them means getting a "maintainence cut", I don't think I want to. I don't want to do anything to slow the growth, but I also don't want a head full of damaged hair....greatful for any advice:D

I'm at the same mark, mate. I agree there have been times I wanted to shave it all off...some real rough times. Now I just don't care what it looks like cause I've gotten this far. I can handle another 3 months.

Contrary to popular belief, split ends DO NOT travel all the way up the hair shaft. Eventually, one half of the split will break off. This usually happens no more than an inch from the end of the hair. Usually, the other half stays at its original length. Sometimes, both sides will break off, leaving THAT STRAND about one inch shorter. The problem with cutting off split ends, is that it also cuts all the other hairs that are not split. So now THEY ALL are one inch shorter.
Also, if you never cut your hair, then you will find that your hairs have naturally tapered ends that come to a fine point. These uncut hairs are MUCH MORE resistant to splitting than cut ones that have the core exposed at the end.
