Undercuts?

Just time to ask for a little opinion here, what do you all think of undercuts with long hair like Jason Newstead from Metallica used to have? I'm interested to know because 1)I think that the shaved/long dynamic is really cool and 2) I have REALLY think and REALLY curly hair which doesn't hang at all. It's about 4-5 Ins. long right now and I figured that chopping the sides and back off would lead to easier hanging.
Anyhow, tell me what you think of the style, oh and if anyone's ever had that haircut before, is it irritating to have to keep shaving your head or are there any other drawbacks?
Thanks!

do you have any pictures to show as a guideline ?? with curly hair i wouldnt worry about it hanging down at like 5 inchs.. mine didnt start properly hanging down untill it was like 8 inchs long and even now it still springs up and looks curly. as for an undercut.. well thats totally upto your own discretion. i personally wouldnt get it done for the sake of "easing" your growing out period as this will just lead to a longer awkward phase should you ever want the back and sides to be long. and if you want the long look its generally the back and sides that play a major role in how it looks.. it seems that undercuts are the thing for neat ponytails or OTT ponytails.
take a look at this site for the sort of things that can be done with undercut hair...

of course what you do with your hair is up to you . i had an under cut when i was around 4 inch of growth. im now at like 8 - 9 inchs of growth and trust me you have no idea how much i regret getting an undercut now. im letting it grow but well the top of my hair is miles ahead of the rest !

Cheers for the link...some of the cybergoth looks are neat. Nah, I haven't any pictures but my hair is basically like Jack Osbourne's with his 'white guy afro' thing going on so if you've seen that you'll know what I'm dealing with...
I'll try and find some pics of Phil from Pantera when he had this long-mohawk thing going on as well which I thought was kinda neat...
But seriously, do you think that the Jack Osbourne type of hair would ever hang properly?

I wouldn't use an undercut as a temporary growing out style, only if
you want it as a long term style. I have thick curly hair and have
had an undercut for 2 1/2 years and still love it. Of course I'm in
a very small minority and don't give a damn about being up to date
with every little style change.

Undercuts only work as far as looks go on a few people. Mostly pro wrestlers. Personally, I think this style is outmoded and obsolete and really is dating itself. It's like undercuts are SO 1980s-90s. Im just warning you dude, be absolutely SURE that you want this because I know many a longhair that have fallen prey to the idea that an undercut would look cool and instead it looks awful and VOILA! They have short hair again.
Be advised.

IMO, undercuts only look decent on people with perfectly straight hair. If your hair is wavy or curly, you'll find that it behaves much worse without the hair on the back and sides.

I did that for the same reason, I wanted my hair to hang better also to stay cooler during the summer, but now I regret it, because as a later found out, it would all eventually start hanging better, now I have this curly fluff that sticks out whenever I braid or tie my hair back, it was also a pain to shave, I had to use two mirrors, I still dont trust barbers, but hopefully in about a year itll start to blend in with the rest, theres a pic of what it looks like from behind, from about a month ago. in the short run it looks good, but but over time is just isnt worth it.
