knot prevention & treatment?

I have noticed I've been finding more and more knots in my hair. I suppose it is from me tossing and turning whilst sleeping. Any suggestions on preventing and treating knots? I've simply just nipped off the knot with scissors, but I don't want to make a habit of this.

I spritz my morning hair with Paul Mitchell Detangling spray. Then I gently comb the *bottom* couple of inches, stopping at any knots. When I find a knot I work it out with my fingers by gently pulling the tangled hair strands sideways. I've never had a knot that didn't slip apart this way. I think the detangling spray makes the hair a bit slippery.Once I comb around the bottom few inches I start combing an a few inches higher and so on. Usually any knots are in the bottom couple of inches in the back. It only takes two minutes at most and doesn't involve scissors or loss of hair.

I guess you are talking about knots on individual hair rather than tangles of many hairs.
If the knot it near the end of a hair, it's easiest to cut the knot off. But if the knot is far from the end of a hair, then I try to untie the knot with a pin, so I can save every precious inch of the hair.

If I sleep an abnormally long time we are talking dreadful knots. I just pick it out using my fingers like a brush. If you practice it is easy to untangle it without breaking it apart.
