. . . I am a painter so I have to have some 'appropriate' music to listen to.
Radiohead's 'Hail To The Thief' is just weird & experimental enough...
to keep me going right now.
I alternate alternative roack with classical music depending on my mood.
How's that?

Unfortunately I haven't really met many people into the this kind of music since college. I'm a big Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic fan and wish I could meet others who enjoy these bands.

High!
My preferences are (in order of rank):
1. 70s progressive rock (YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!, Genesis, Jethro Tull)
2. symphonic electronic music (Vangelis, Synergy)
3. sequencer-dominated electronic music (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Michael Garrison)
4. German "krautrock" of the 70s (Birth Control, Novalis, Eloy, Epitaph, Jane, Triumvirat etc.)
5. New Wave/synth pop of the late 70s/early 80s (Simple Minds, Blondie, Devo, OMD, Depeche Mode, Haircut 100, Duran Duran)
6. 60s beat/folkrock (Beatles, Byrds, Incredible String Band)
Strong dislikes:
1. all dancefloor stuff since the late 80s
2. Rap/hip hop
3. watered down modern pseudo-soul boygroups
4. speed/death/black metal
See you in Khyberspace!

mostly classic Rock and some metal, while there is some decent music today just SO much of it feels watered down and doesn't have the same feel to me as some of the oldies
some of my fav groups to listen to are
The Beatles (my fav band of all time) Wings, The Eagles, Phish, the rolling stones, Queen, ZZ Top, ACDC, Huey lewis and the news, Bruce Springstein, U2 , some of Creed's stuff
and a few others

Yesterday, I went to about 5 different CD stores and no one had even heard of Luca Turilli (a couple had heard of Blind Guardian), until I found this almost entirely metal store. I think I'm going to haunt that place. Yes...well...forgive my enthusiam.

Although, I never really got into the...uh..."growl metal" I called it. You couldn't understand anything that they were saying. I like it now that they're mixing it with lyrics you can understand.

Northern Soul, Happy Hardcore, classical and owt else I like the sound of at the time. To be honest, I don't really like to label music with a genre - I either like something or I don't.
Like Sherri, country makes me run screaming from the room (though, paradoxically I've bought the odd country single that I do like). Rap I just find boring and depressing.

I love Heavy Metal, but only good 80ies bands like Dio, Death, Control Denied. I dont like Metal bands with female singers because it seems that they are attracting attention to themselves instead of the music itself.
Finally, I absolutely despise rap music, dance, reggae, RnB, soul and all that similar cr~p.

Just because I hate rap music, hip hop reggae,..etc.. doesn`t mean Im racist. Just read the lyrics of rap music and then tell me who is the racist.
You shouldn`t make assumptions like this and certainly not treat me a b_stard. Or is it that you listen to rap too much and that`s why you are insulting me for no reason??

rap and hip hop has nothing to do with soul, r&b, etc, which acually takes singing ability to perform. And if u werent so white, you would know what rap/hip hop was really all about.

Rap has flourished because of white kids. There are plenty of white and other rappers who aren't black. Michael Boulton is considered one of the biggest soul singers today...he is white...I can't stand his music. There are plenty more examples which I am sure you are aware of. A person can dislike a genre of music (or genres) based on the sound as opposed to the diverse racial backgrounds of the people who make the music. If someone doesn't like the Japanese rappers but likes some of the Japanese metal bands does that make him racist towards Japanese people?
One of the bands I am in is a thrash metal band and the lead singer/guitar player is an African American who writes all the songs. He kicks as as does the black guy who fronts Sepultura, etc. Did you ask T ar i k h what he thinks about Jimi Hendrix before calling him a racist for not liking some styles of music?
He is SOOOO

ROFL!!!
You could also say I'm racist because I don't like country.
Lighten up, dude. Everyone has their own personal taste.
Music has no ethnicity. It just has a beat and lyrics. You like it or you don't.

Well, some of my favourite acts are Type O Negative (Life Is Killing Me = *****), Green Carnation, old Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, and Buckcherry.

Metal: Death, Control Denied, Opeth, Emperor, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Morbid Angel, Zyklon, Nile, Symphony X, Blind Guardian, Morgana Lefay, Decapitated, Sceptic, Atheist, Cynic, Borknagar, Vader, etc.
Shred: Michael Romeo, Joe Satriani, Eddie van Halen, Michael Angelo Batio, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Classical: J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Vivaldi, Haydn, C.P.E. Bach, Grieg, Wagner, Scarlatti, Diabelli, Paganini, and Mendelssohn, just to name a few...
and a little jazz, like Jaco Pastorius (awesome bassist!), Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday. ...and if any of you like classical and metal, but haven't heard, try a little group named Apocalyptica. They became "famous" for their recordings of Metallica played on four cellos (they even play the guitar solos, and everything is up to speed with the original recording!). They also did renditions of a few opera pieces, and a remake of "In the Hall of the Mountain King," by Edvard Grieg. PS: I also play classical, metal, and a smattering of jazz... here in Arkansas, this is rare.

Classical
Heavy Metal
Progressive Rock
Soundtracks
80's New Wave/Pop
Favorite Artists:
Artists/Bands
Nightwish - Power Metal at its best. This band formed in 1997 as an experiment in acoustics mixed with Opera. The demos they released quickly proved that Opera is simply too overpowering for any acoustic guitar. Having come from other metal bands, they decided to go electric and managed to introduce their lead vocalist, a trained Opera singer named Tarja Turunen, to the majesty that is Metal. What resulted is a wet dream for anyone with a fine palette for what has appropriately been termed by the music industry as Opera Metal.
Enigma - There is no better music to meditate to, in the world.
Sarah McLachlan - Before she sold out and began producing more commercially viable material. I'm convinced Lilith Fair ruined her.
Cyndi Lauper - I have all of her albums, but, sadly, only like those songs that managed to see radio play.
Dream Theater - There's no two ways about it. These guys just @#$% rock. The first time I heard, "Pull Me Under," I thought, 'there's no way anyone is this @#$% good!' I then went to see them in concert, here in Kansas City, and was quite pleasantly proven wrong. They are that @#$% good!
Savatage - This band seems to be an amalgam of experimentation. They've produced nothing that's radio friendly that I know of. That's not to say they're music is controversial. Quite the contrary in fact. It's just so completely 'out there' that few people outside of their fan base could really ever get into it.
Bon Jovi - The ultimate in party rock. I dare anyone to listen to "Dead or Alive" and not come out with an insane urge to strap a guitar to your back, grab a motorcycle, and just ride wherever the road takes you.
The Cult - Another great party band.
Other favorites include:
Fates Warning
Guns 'n Roses
Blondie
Enya
Danny Elfman
Midnight Oil
Men at Work
Tompson Twins
'Til Tuesday
T'Pau
The Cure
Paradise Lost
Snakeriver Conspiracy
Concrete Blonde
Rob Zombie
Ozzy Osbourne
Museum
Queenzryche
Depeche Mode
Type O Negative
