I have been growing my hair since november, but everyone keeps saying to me that by trimming my hair it will actually grow quicker(by getting rid of the split ends apparently),is this true? or is it best just to not touch my hair at all and just let it grow?

Leave it alone. Cutting does not make it grow faster, it only makes it shorter.

Very few here stand by maintaining trims for hair quality, not necessarily quicker growth. The majority here just take good care of their hair with out regular trims to maintain optimum growth. This here is my opinion about cutting split ends to increase growth: Cutting shortens hair taking you back a step in what you have already achieved. We as humans loose 40 to 100 hairs a day on average anyway, so a few lost to slit ends traveling all the way up the shaft is not really a big deal in my book. Taking gentle care of your hair with the way you treat it and what you use in hair care products will cut way down on, if not eliminate split ends all together. So I myself just let mother nature run her course and let it grow while taking as best of care that I can to try and not damage it. When I do get to below shoulder length I will get a straightening out trim to even things up. That way, I will have enough length achieved so as to not be devastated by the loss. Your call on your end, but this is my opinion. Hope this helps! Peace!

Good point, I never thought of that! I think, however, that a person can have up to 100,000 hairs on his head at any given time, so it's a rather small percentage. But it's true that trims are only to maintain the quality of the hair. It's annoying to grow hair, only to have it trimmed off later. I've learned that when I grow my hair for a long time without a cut, the hair does get longer, but you end up having to get more cut off at one time because it's damaged, so you're back to where you started anyway. Plus, it happened no matter how careful I was. A lot of frequent trims is less traumatic than one big huge one every so often.
If you desire length over quality, then go ahead and get less frequent trims. But I figure, what's the point of having long hair if it's going to be all broken and split and needs to be cut off anyway? Frustrating as it is, I personally think it's better in the long run. I guess I'm in the minority (as usual, so I don't mind ^_^)

I'd say it's best to leave it. You'll get mixed responses about the whole split-end thing - the argument is that if you don't trim them they'll break off quicker than your hair can grow.
A trim twice a year can be a good idea - but don't get paranoid, just leave it be for the most part.

Last time I had long hair, I used to trim it once every 3 months. I am talking a very short amount of the ends, so don't every one give you that oh you will push off having long hair for some extended time due to trimming it story. The ladies at the hair stylist place used to be impressed as I took better care of my hair than most ladies.

I get mine trimmed about once a year - it's due again next month. I do this to keep the ends in shape and the length about where I want (mid shoulder blade). Fortunately, split ends just isn't a problem.
However, trimming will make the hair shorter and it will take longer to grow it out again - this is simply a physical fact. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

Look, of you have strong hair that doesn't split of damage easily then there really is no point in cutting it. Especially if you haven't reached your goal length. Am I making sense here? In that case I'd just take good care of it and let it grow.
