Having some trouble growing my hair
Posted by andrew Johnson on August 18, 2003 at 18:23:25: Previous Next
This is the first time in my 25 years on this earth I am attempting to grow long hair. I'm having some trouble and would like some advice.
This is my first time posting on this board-so hello all!
1. I have real curly hair. After eight months without a cut, the curls still keep it just below my ear. I've tried some straigteners and stuff to no avail. It's very hard to manage, and i usually just slick it back. Ohio (my homestate) has very rude and unforgiving people. I get made fun of at work a lot because I don't " conform" and shave my head like all the other guys.
2. I've always battled with dandruff( i guess it's a cronic condition for me handed down from my father) and can keep it in check, but lately it's been getting pretty bad. I'm using Nuetrogena T/sal once a week now.
3. what sort of progress should i have made in 8 months? I've never let my hair get longer than and inch
4. When i wash(every other day) i can pul out about ten to fiftenn strands when it's wet. Is this normal. i can only do this on the back of my head.
Thanks for any advice..

Well all men with long hair seem to get this extra 'attention', for some it may be worse than others, but what you have to ask yourself is who is trying something different with their life and being the real man there? Those people you can do without trust me

Try out a few anti dandruff shampoos, see which works best for you and be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly

8 months... changes from person to person but id say the average is around 4-5 inches

Very normal, hairs come out!

I'm from Ohio as well. I went through public High School in Youngstown, Ohio and it wasn't a walk in the park. I get my share of discrimination, but it hasn't detered me from my goal. Hopefully college, which is also in Ohio, will be a better atmosphere. It's less than a week away!

Hey.
On the dandruff front, I use Nizoral shampoo. That seems to be the best, you use it every 3/4 days. I wouldn't use any other shampoo with this as some others may suggest though. A doctor told me you don't want to wash your hair very frequently as this can actually cause your hair to get MORE greasy thus more dandruff! Might not completely cure your problem but should help. Remember, it's very unlikely anyone else will actually notice your dandruff except you, so don't stress about it too much.
Good luck!

Hey, I feel your pain man, I got really curly hair as well. It's been nearly a year since a cut, and while it's wet I can pull it down to below my chin, but dry it tends to stay right at or above my eyes.
About the Dandruff, I wouldn't worry, I only wash mine every other day with Tresemme's "Total Moisture" shampoo and condition every day with the same brand conditioner, and that seems to help the friziness a bit. the other thing I do (which really controls the frizz), is to put a small amount of conditioner in my hair after I've wet it thoroughly, then towel dried it, and use the conditioner like gel. It won't damage your hair like gel can, and it keeps that "wet" look, a.k.a. anti-frizzy.
Good luck man!

Thanks for the help and tips.. sometimes I guess I just feel alone in this endeavour. As for being steriotypical, -that's not me. I hold to my orginal opnion-even if it's based on a small circle of people.

Welcome! My two cents:
: Ohio (my homestate) has very rude and unforgiving people. I get made fun of at work a lot because I don't " conform" and shave my head like all the other guys.
Conformity is for sheep. You are becoming part of a very beautiful minority, and screw anyone who doesn't like it! Honestly, that's the best attitude to have. It's your body, you do what you like with it. There was a discussion a while ago which made a good point: in ancient times, slaves had their heads shaved as a sign of bondage. Tell them to put that in their pipe and smoke it!
: 2. I've always battled with dandruff( i guess it's a cronic condition for me handed down from my father) and can keep it in check, but lately it's been getting pretty bad. I'm using Nuetrogena T/sal once a week now.
I used to use a prescription dandruff shampoo in my childhood. Definitely ask your MD if the T/sal doesn't work. Dandruff is mainly caused by a mircoorganism living on the scalp (which is no fault of your own), and it might have become resistant.
: 3. what sort of progress should i have made in 8 months? I've never let my hair get longer than and inch
Depends. I think the average person's hair grows a 1/2 inch a month, faster in summer, slower in winter. So most likely your hair should just be hitting your ears.
: 4. When i wash(every other day) i can pul out about ten to fiftenn strands when it's wet. Is this normal. i can only do this on the back of my head.
Quite normal. You'll notice that more hair seems to come out as it gets longer. You're not going bald, I promise.
Good luck!
